Chatham University welcomes applications for the position of Dean of the Falk School for Sustainability and Environment. We are seeking an experienced and innovative administrator who can recognize the value and potential of a range of academic programs centered in sustainability and connected to an experiential campus designed to be a showcase for sustainable and practical approaches to energy, water, food and agriculture, and the interaction of natural and built systems.

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the new Dean is responsible for the academic and administrative direction of the Falk School of Sustainability and Environment which includes academic programs as well as the Center for Regional Agriculture, Food, and Transformation (CRAFT). The preferred candidate will work with the Faculty, Advancement, and other University units to identify key growth opportunities for the Falk School, and to help to secure external resources and partners to support this growth.

The Falk School was founded in 2010 and is located on the 388-acre Eden Hall Campus, a beautiful and historical setting 19 miles north of the school’s Shadyside campus. From the start, the Eden Hall Campus endeavored to be a fully sustainable campus that generates more energy than it uses and to serve as a “living lab” for our students and for partners across the region and the world. Eden Hall was built from the “below the ground-up” to model sustainable approaches to energy, water, food, and agriculture (https://www.edenhall.chatham.edu). Buildings were constructed to meet LEED Platinum Certification and have received numerous design awards.

Founded in 1869, Chatham University is a private, national university that opened enrollment to all gender identities in 2015. It has an enrollment of over 2200 students. The main Shadyside campus is located in Pittsburgh, PA – one of the country’s most livable cities and great college towns – and is the alma mater of the environmental icon, Rachel Carson ’29.

Principal Duties

  • Work with University leadership and faculty to set and implement strategic goals for the growth of the Falk School in keeping with the University Mission.
  • Develop and execute a visionary plan for academic programs that take advantage of the unique opportunities presented by the Eden Hall campus while maintaining ?scal
  • Lead the Falk School faculty and staff in entrepreneurial and cutting-edge programs in sustainability, environmental science, food studies and related fields that lead to modern career opportunities for our
  • Serve as liaison with Facilities, Admissions, and other non-academic components to ensure proper communication and efficient delivery of services and support for academic
  • Ensure quality in all aspects of teaching, learning, and applied research (curriculum, delivery models, student learning outcomes).
  • Grow student enrollment.
  • Assess needs and allocate resources e?ectively to meet academic and ?nancial goals in accordance with the Campus’s guiding principles for sustainable development.
  • Collaborate with other academic Deans to coordinate program o?erings, review administrative policies and procedures, and improve academic quality and student experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Senior-level academic experience in an appropriate ?eld such as energy production, sustainability, environmental science, earth science, or food studies with a proven record of academic innovation.
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to sustainability principles and
  • At least ?ve years of higher education leadership experience and understanding of academic culture.
  • Strong managerial skills and experience with ?scally responsible budget
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute new initiatives and a track record of success in meeting or exceeding challenging targets.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building
  • Evidence of successful decision-making in a collaborative
  • A commitment to assessment, metrics, and continuous
  • A commitment to furthering the mission and values of Chatham University through growth with quality.
