News Reporter

Tes magazine has led on education news and policy in the UK for over a century, and is looking for a news reporter to join its award-winning editorial team.

Role Overview

This opportunity would suit someone passionate about public interest journalism who wants to become an expert in a fast-moving patch, and who can juggle breaking national news with long-form investigations and analyses.

In this role, you will be comfortable finding exclusives from a variety of sources, from government datasets to conversations with contacts. You will have the hunger and news instincts to produce timely stories that are essential reading for teachers and school leaders.

Tes reporters need to be able to select the best angle for our readers from national stories, as well as seek out hidden stories using their sector expertise.

You might be an ambitious early career journalist with evidence of strong potential, or a more experienced scoop-getter looking to take the next step.

You will also develop the expertise to promote and discuss education stories in the wider media – Tes journalists regularly appear on national outlets such as the BBC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Producing breaking news stories, data analyses and investigations
  • Learning and maintaining knowledge about the sector, across a range of specialist patches
  • Working at speed and with accuracy to produce news content to tight deadlines
  • Building and maintaining high-level contacts
  • Reporting from education and political events
  • Using social media to promote stories, develop a profile and generate ideas

What will you need to succeed?

  • An NCTJ or equivalent qualification
  • Ability to work independently and to tight deadlines
  • Personal skills to nurture relationships with senior contacts
  • Keen eye for detail
  • Data skills, or the ability and desire to develop in this area
  • Evidence of strong news instincts
