Job Title: Health Care Assistant

Location: CRGH, UK

Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours/week) across a 5-day working week, with one in four weekends required

Reporting to: HCA Team Leader

Accountable to: Head of Nursing

The Role

We are looking for a motivated and compassionate Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our team. In this diverse and rewarding role, you will assist with clinical and non-clinical duties, supporting patients undergoing fertility treatments. Your work will be integral to providing patients with a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment, helping them throughout their journey.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Perform competent phlebotomy as per medical requests, ensuring accurate labelling and logging of samples.
  • Act as a chaperone for other staff during medical procedures, providing support and comfort to patients.
  • Assist clinicians during Embryo Transfer procedures and abdominal scanning.
  • Help with data entry and updating ultrasound measurements.
  • Follow aseptic techniques when assisting with invasive procedures and decontaminate trans-vaginal probes between scans.
  • Maintain clinical areas by cleaning, sanitizing, and organizing between patient procedures.
  • Ensure safe disposal of sharps and waste management in compliance with protocols.
  • Practice excellent bedside manner, demonstrating empathy, compassion, and respect for patients’ dignity.
  • Provide injection teaching sessions and assist with the completion of consent forms, checklists, and updates on the IDEAS patient portal.
  • Offer reassurance and answer questions from patients undergoing or awaiting treatment outcomes.
  • Be proficient in basic life support and remain calm and composed in emergency situations.

Non-Clinical Duties

  • Conduct patient ID checks at the start of each appointment to maintain confidentiality.
  • Introduce yourself to patients and ensure they feel at ease throughout their procedures.
  • Manage the stockroom, monitor deliveries, and rotate stock accordingly.
  • Report any stock needs to the Team Leader/Deputy Manager and assist with pharmacy quality management tasks.
  • Perform daily quality management checks in clinical areas, ensuring rooms are stocked and ready for patient care.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of the IDEAS patient portal for accurate documentation and patient tracking.
  • Liaise between multidisciplinary teams to ensure patients receive comprehensive care.
  • Coordinate with pharmacy suppliers to ensure timely prescription deliveries and manage associated administrative tasks.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, ensuring a clear handover at the end of each shift.

Essentials

Person Specification:

  • Minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to empathize and effectively interact with patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload efficiently.
  • Good IT skills, with familiarity in patient portals or electronic health records.

Desirable

  • Experience in fertility care or women’s health.
  • Previous experience working in a similar healthcare environment.
