Job Description
Apply to be a proud employee of the Pinellas County Public Works Landscape Services grounds maintenance team. We are currently accepting employment applications for a experienced, safety conscious “Ground Maintenance Equipment Operator”. Landscape Services preforms the grounds maintenance activities along the county owned right-of-ways, roadway medians, ponds and sidewalk clearing in excess of 1,075 acres per mowing cycle.
Work schedule: Monday – Thursday, 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
What Would You Do?
- Operates equipment in the assignments of ground maintenance services for public right-of-way, roadway medians, ponds or other various County owned properties.
- Operates zero-turn lawn mowers, line trimmers, edger’s, blowers, tractors, skid loaders, wood chippers, truck and trailer and other related vegetation management equipment.
- Performs manual labor and will utilize hand tools to supplement equipment operations at times.
- Performs removal of non-purposeful or invasive vegetation within public right-of-ways, medians, sidewalk clearing or other County owned properties through manual labor or equipment at times.
- Performs daily maintenance inspections, lubrication/grease, sharpen mower blades daily and other minor maintenance work on equipment.
- Communicates with the Field Operations Supervisor to determine work priorities and resolve work problems.
- Picks up and hauls debris as assigned.
- Communicates from a computer, cell phone, and written reports.
- Provides labor or equipment operation assistance to Urban Forestry as needed for right-of-way tree maintenance or unwanted vegetation removal activities..
What Do You Need To Have?
- Six (6) months of experience in commercial landscape maintenance and/or experience maintaining roadway right-of-way, road medians; or
- A Public Works Academy training certificate for equipment operators; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- A Pinellas County employee equipment certification that includes experience or training on job related equipment(s); or
- Physical strength and have the ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor tasks
- Willing and able to obtain and maintain a Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Certification within 6 months of hire.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
- Other highly desirable knowledge, skills, abilities, and credentials relevant to a position.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
- Mandatory work schedules before, during and after any disaster or storm as directed by the Public Works director
Highly Desirable
- FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP)
- Pesticide Applicators License
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and use of dump and flatbed trucks, tractors, and related public works equipment;
- Knowledge of the operation and repair of small to medium equipment;
- Knowledge of component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of medium to heavy equipment;
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of medium to heavy equipment;
- Skill in the operation of medium to heavy automotive, maintenance, and construction equipment;
- Ability to make emergency repairs to motor driven equipment;
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions and possession of sufficient physical strength and agility to operate medium sized equipment and perform manual labor.
