Job description
The Piney Woods School is seeking an innovative individual with the energy and passion to serve as Director of Admissions. The successful candidate will appreciate and embrace the school’s history, mission and values, but will also be committed to creating new possibilities for the school that will help to guarantee a strong and vibrant future.
The Piney Woods School was founded in 1909 on land known as the piney woods located near Mississippi’s capital city of Jackson, emphasizing educating the head, heart and hands of every student through academic achievement, community service and occupational skills. The Piney Woods School endures today as the largest historically African American, independent, college preparatory, boarding school in the country.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree preferred in a field relative to student development, student personnel services, or counseling. Bachelor’s degree in the aforementioned areas with at least 3 years experience in admissions, recruitment, and retention
- Knowledge of recruiting practices and procedures
- Self-directed and able to work independently
- Working knowledge of the school’s mission, goals, objectives and programs
- Ability to work independently and supervise other staff
- Some travel required
- Well groomed
- Professional attitude
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Plan and implement strategies for recruitment and retention of students who meet the student profile; develop applicant pool by creating broad based awareness of The Piney Woods School’s mission, goals, academic and residential programs
- Research and build expertise regarding recruiting issues and trends
- Coordinate and attend recruiting activities on and off campus
- Provide appropriate screening selection mechanisms for student selection
- Serve on the Admissions Committee
- Coordinate all aspects of the admissions process
- Review admissions applications for acceptance/denial
- Supervise admissions staff
- Coordinate tours for interested parents, groups, and sponsors
- Review and revise admissions documents as needed
- Involve faculty, staff, and administrators in recruiting
- Conduct interviews with prospective and withdrawing students and appropriate follow-ups when needed
- Work with the Development Office in developing media campaigns and recruitment materials
- Track results and effectiveness of recruiting initiatives
- Interface with various foundations, institutions, and referral sources
- Work cooperatively with all Piney Woods School constituents (faculty, staff, administration, parents, alumni and board of directors)
- Provide all admissions program documentation including planning and evaluation documents
- Exercise proper and safe work practices
- Help enforce students’ dress code
- Carry out all school rules, policies, and procedures
- Perform other related functions as requested by your immediate supervisor and/or school administrators
