Job Brief
The Materials Science Technician will be responsible for enabling timely delivery of high-quality data to help support Pilot Plant Operation and R&D efforts at Brimstone by operating analytical equipment, processing and performing QC checks on data, and maintaining optimal instrument performance through calibration and maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will be an effective team-player who is enthusiastic about contributing to Brimstone’s mission to decarbonize cement. This position reports to the Senior Analytical Scientist.
This role is based in Oakland, California and is a full-time, on-site position.
Key Focus Areas of the role may include:
- Day-to-day operation and calibration of analytical equipment including but not limited to XRF, XRD, and ICP-OES
- Responsible for minimizing equipment downtime by tracking and performing routine instrument calibration, preventative maintenance, and routine repairs
- Perform data analysis, processing, and QA/QC checks of routine lab experiment data before reporting and publishing results in the company database
- Give feedback to senior team members on Materials Science team processes, procedures, and workflows to increase efficiency and sample throughput while ensuring data quality
- Support routine analytical measurements and data processing for cross-functional teams of engineers/scientists at Brimstone
- Demonstrating flexibility and a collaborative mindset by supporting team members with tasks and projects that may extend beyond primary job responsibilities, ensuring overall team success
- Perform routine sample preparation tasks, following standard operating procedures for specific sample types
For this role, we’re looking for:
- You have a BA/BS/AA in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related STEM field, and you are interested in analytical chemistry and equipment maintenance. Prior experience working in an analytical lab is a plus
- You can effectively manage your time to complete all day-to-day tasks, given a list of assignments and relative priorities
- You are curious, like problem solving, have a high attention to detail, and communicate your needs and blockers proactively
- Proficiency with written and digital data entry and record keeping using e.g. Microsoft Office Suite (Excel), Asana
- Ability to lift 40 pounds
Additional skills that are preferred but not required:
- Analytical sample preparation experience (liquid and solid samples)
- Knowledge of elemental analysis techniques (ICP-OES, XRF, XRD)
