Chronicle Books is seeking a Royalty Accountant to manage all aspects of the royalty process and related accounting responsibilities. In this role, you will work closely with editorial teams, authors, agents, and all levels of management to ensure accurate and efficient royalty processing. This position is integral to our accounting operations, requiring a strong combination of financial acumen, analytical thinking, and exceptional communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Oracle Royalty Module (review, updates, troubleshooting)
  • Review and approve author royalty deals, advance payments, and payment requests
  • Validate royalty statements, retention reserves,subrights, and adjustments
  • Manage month-end close activities, including resolving royalty batch errors
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and royalty expense accruals
  • Handle audit requests for author deals and maintain compliance
  • Collaborate with IT on system improvements; address queries from authors and agents

Hiring Salary Range: $68,000-$89,700. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected salary for this position and will be determined by factors including, but not limited to, an applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is eligible for our profit share plan.

Schedule: Employees at Chronicle Books follow a regular hybrid schedule in our San Francisco office of at least three (3) in-office days per week and up to five (5) in-office days per week, depending on project and business needs.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or related field (3–5 years’ experience or equivalent)
  • Proficiency with Oracle R12 or similar ERP (IPM Suite/Fadel Royalty Management a plus)
  • Advanced Excel (including VLOOKUP) and Word skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and multitasking abilities
  • Excellent communication skills; able to work independently and as part of a team
