Exceptional Children (EC) Manager – Anderson Academy Charter School

Location: Winston-Salem, NC, on-site;

Schedule: 10 month position, 1st shift Monday – Friday, with some weekend/evening hours depending upon events/program needs

Hiring Range: $48,000 to $52,000 annually

Education/Experience/Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 3+ years experience teaching experience with students with disabilities.
  • Valid teaching license issued by the NC Department of Public Instruction in at least one area of disability.
  • Experience in program coordination, instructional coaching, or administrative roles within EC services is preferred.
  • Additional certifications or coursework in educational leadership, curriculum development, or behavior intervention preferred.
  • A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills And Competencies

  • Special Education Expertise – Deep understanding of EC policies, compliance, and best practices.
  • Instructional Leadership – Ability to coach, mentor, and train educators in effective EC teaching strategies.
  • Program Coordination – Skilled in managing and improving EC programs, including self-contained classrooms and interventions.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making – Proficient in analyzing student performance data to refine teaching methods and learning outcomes.
  • Trauma-Informed Practices – Commitment to integrating equity, justice, and trauma-responsive approaches into education.
  • Technology Proficiency – Comfortable using educational tools (Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, learning management systems, etc.).
  • Problem-Solving & Adaptability – Creative thinker who can quickly adjust to new challenges and implement solutions.
  • Communication & Collaboration – Strong ability to work with teachers, administrators, parents, and external stakeholders.
  • Passion & Initiative – A self-motivated educator who is eager to innovate and advocate for students with disabilities.

Job Duties

Program Management & Compliance

  • Oversee EC programs, including self-contained classrooms, intervention groups, and assessment teams.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, North Carolina EC regulations, and school policies.
  • Monitor IEP development and implementation, ensuring alignment with state and federal guidelines.
  • Collaborate with school leadership on special education programming, procedural compliance, and student placement decisions.

Curriculum & Instructional Support

  • Assist teachers in implementing effective special education instructional techniques.
  • Provide specialized instructional strategies tailored to EC student needs.
  • Support inclusive education models by collaborating with general education teachers.
  • Develop and refine curriculum materials and new course offerings for EC students.

Professional Development & Coaching

  • Coordinate and provide staff development opportunities for teachers and administrators.
  • Mentor new EC teachers through structured induction programs.
  • Conduct classroom observations, modeling, and mentoring to enhance teacher effectiveness.
  • Work closely with curriculum specialists, academic coaches, and instructional leaders to integrate best practices.

Assessment & Program Evaluation

  • Develop and implement alternative assessment tools for EC students.
  • Analyze student progress data to evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Recommend and implement improvements based on assessment insights.
