Job Title: Staking Technician

Position Summary

This position is responsible for surveying, designing, and staking electric distribution lines and service facilities. As a Staking Technician, you will ensure these tasks are completed in compliance with WIN Energy REMC construction specifications, as well as RUS, NESC, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations, to develop a safe, efficient, and reliable distribution system.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Survey and evaluate proposed sites for electric distribution lines and service facilities.
  • Design and stake electric distribution systems in accordance with WIN Energy REMC construction specifications, RUS, NESC, and applicable regulations.
  • Collaborate with district line superintendents and members to identify service requirements and ensure satisfaction while maintaining system efficiency and safety.
  • Utilize mapping tools, software, and GPS equipment to create accurate system designs and records.
  • Procure and assist in right of way easements and permitting.
  • Prepare work orders, cost estimates, and supporting documentation for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Conduct fieldwork in various weather conditions, gathering data and ensuring accurate staking of project sites.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, cooperative policies, and regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with members, contractors, and internal teams to ensure clarity and alignment on project details.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating GIS mapping systems and system records as necessary.
  • Perform field inspections as required.
  • Assist with outage restoration during storms.
  • Attend and work the Annual Meeting.
  • After an adequate training period, will participate in the “Supervisor On-Call” rotation, overseeing after-hours outages and related activities.

Competencies

  • Technical Expertise: Knowledge of electric distribution design, staking, and standards (e.g., RUS, NESC) with proficiency in relevant computer programs, GPS equipment and staking programs.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to evaluate sites, design safe systems, and prepare detailed work orders and cost estimates.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with members, contractors, and teams, ensuring clarity.
  • Regulatory and Safety Awareness: Understanding and compliance with industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols.
  • Planning and Organization: Effective management of multiple projects with accurate documentation and system records.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in engineering, surveying, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Basic knowledge of utility construction, mapping, or surveying is a plus but not required; on-the-job training provided
  • Licenses: Valid Operator Driver’s License.

Physical Demands

This position requires that the individual split time between office and fieldwork, with tasks involving the operation of tools, equipment, and technology, as well as interaction with coworkers, members, and contractors. This position requires traveling to and working at various field locations within the service territory. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

Frequently walk, sit, see, talk, hear, and use arms, hands, and fingers to handle, type, and reach.

Occasionally stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Fieldwork will involve exposure to outdoor conditions, varying weather, terrain, and occasional vehicular traffic. Some offsite work will be required for meetings, seminars, training, and other company functions, with occasional overnight stays.

Work Environment

This position involves a combination of office and outdoor fieldwork. The candidate must be able to work in varying weather conditions and may occasionally be required to walk long distances in rugged terrain.
