Position Summary
The UCLA Department of Philosophy has been among the top ranked doctoral programs for decades, with strengths across the discipline, including philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of science, logic, philosophy of mathematics, ethics, social and political philosophy, philosophy of law, and the history of philosophy, from antiquity to the present.
As head advisor for the department of Philosophy, this poisition would oversee the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure effective operations of counseling services for over 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Major duties include supervision over all aspects of undergraduate counseling; coordination of graduate recruitment, admissions, and job placement; and management of graduate student funding and academic progress. Counsel and/or refer students experiencing academic or personal difficulties. Work closely with the Chair, Vice Chair, and Manager on short and long term scheduling and programmatic planning for the undergraduate and graduate curricula. In consultation with faculty, manage course scheduling for the academic year as well as summer sessions and manage the quarterly assignment of teaching assistants to courses. Manage and process students’ financial support including fees, fellowships, and awards. Maintain databases regarding undergraduate and graduate enrollment, admissions, degree conferrals, and other information as requested by the Chair, Dean’s Office, and faculty committees. Serve on scholarship committee and act as liaison to the UCLA Division of Graduate Education. Supervise, establish performance standards, and provide training and guidance to the Front Desk Coordinator with respect to university/departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for planning departmental student events including Commencement, undergraduate and graduate new student orientations, recruitment visits, and award ceremonies.

Qualifications
Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff and other campus units. (Required)Excellent communication and writing well-composed and grammatically correct memos, letters, and reports to convey information from/to Chair, students, faculty, staff, other university offices and general public. (Required)Skill in advising graduate and undergraduate students to assist them with progress through the major or Graduate Program, and ability to judge when to refer students to the Faculty Advisor. (Required)Skill in organizational and financial planning and ability to create budgets for the Student Affairs Office. (Preferred)Skill in using UCLA Student Information Systems (SIS), UCPath, UCTRS, Concur, Bruinbuy and PAN. (Preferred)Skill in collecting and collating information from a number of different sources in order to present reports that are easily understandable by faculty and students. (Required)Skill in the use and maintenance of filing systems, which have both paper and electronic elements, and are used by several individuals and committees. (Required)Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload and a variety of duties. Remain friendly and helpful while working in an environment of frequent interruptions. (Required)Self-directed and able to independently prioritize job needs and follow through on assignments. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. (Required)Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters of student affairs and departmental sensitive issues. (Required)Ability to deal with difficult issues in a calm and collected manner, explore options and recommend solutions. (Required)Ability to supervise, motivate, train, and evaluate a subordinate staff member. Establish performance standards, provide guidance, and serve as a back-up to the Front Desk Coordinator.
