Position Summary
The Histotechnologist processes surgical, autopsy and study specimens for pathologic diagnosis, including tissue fixation, processing, freezing, microtomy, frozen sectioning and staining slides for microscopic examination by the Pathologist.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Performs related special staining techniques, which may include immunohistochemical, immunoflourescent and
enzymehistochemical stains.
- Operates computerized equipment for processing and staining of specimens.
- Uses laboratory computer system to add, cancel and verify completed orders.
- Performs and documents quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Performs trouble-shooting of instruments, processing and staining processes,
- Places engineering and biomed service requests as needed.
- Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply.
- Performs specimen receiving and processing and answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
- Regularly reports all unacceptable quality control and instrument failures to a senior technologist, pathology coordinator,
manager and/or Pathologist and documents discrepancies and their resolutions.
- Assumes one or more of the following responsibilities: outside facility frozen section room maintenance, projects, teaching, tech
in charge, reagent validations and evaluation of new technology.
- Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state
and local standards.
- Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
- Responsible for maintaining an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program including performance and
evaluation of key quality indicators.
- Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
- Practices infection control and safety policies.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
Qualifications
Education/Training
Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology.
Licensure/Certification
Current license in the State of Alabama as Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Qualification: Histology Technologist.
