Clinic Details — Kelowna General Hospital
Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the region’s main referral center offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. Kelowna General Hospital is home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features; 12 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac Surgery. Our state of the art Centennial Building also recently opened and boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, modern operating rooms and a rooftop helipad. KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC. With the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre and new medical inpatient units in the Centennial Building, dedicated psychiatry units for youth and adults, a modern maternity ward, enhanced laboratory and clinical departments in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building, and an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School, KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.
Practice Details
Unique opportunity to be involved with the creation and growth of an ambitious trauma service at Kelowna General Hospital, a level 2 trauma centre. There are six positions available to those interested in being a part of this new initiative. In this role, you will be working in a rotating roster 5 other physician colleagues and a multidisciplinary team to assess and manage poly-trauma patients & patients in special populations (pediatric, pregnant, elderly patients with multiple injuries). This program is expected to treat approximately 800 patients per year with average daily census of 8-15 patients with significant seasonal variation in case numbers. In this role, you will work in hospital and outpatient clinic settings, as well as providing outreach support virtually to rural and regional hospitals.
Ideal candidates include physicians with an appropriate background including Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Critical Care, Anesthesia or other appropriate specialties, with a strong interest and background in the full spectrum of trauma care and ideally with a demonstrated interest in trauma education (i.e. ATLS instructor). You should also have experience looking after medically complex & socially vulnerable injured inpatients.
In This Role, You Will
- Lead and provide comprehensive resuscitative trauma care.
- Lead and provide comprehensive care to admitted trauma patients.
- Consult on trauma patient throughout the hospital not admitted to the service.
- Support referring hospitals with management, transport and disposition of trauma patients.
- Lead and engage in education through multi-disciplinary trauma rounds, teaching of medical, nursing and allied health staff and students, and resident physicians.
- Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives throughout the continuum of trauma care.
