Description Of Job

The Assistant Director, Assistive Technology, acts as a bridge between Disability Access Services and Accommodated Testing. This position will oversee all accommodated testing, assistive technology, and book remediation for Arapahoe Community College. This position will collaborate with faculty, staff and other internal and external stakeholders on issues surrounding accommodated testing and assistive technology. In this role, you will work directly with DAS, Testing, and Instruction to ensure that students with disabilities have access to course materials, learning tools and learning assessments.

Responsibilities Of This Role Include The Following

  • Act as a subject-matter expert on assistive technology.
  • Manage all vendor contracts, licenses and software acquisition directly or through IT as applicable.
  • Research and appraise software and hardware to support accommodations, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Establish, maintain, and train an e-text editing team to remediate books and course materials for use with assistive technology.
  • Serve as a point of contact for inquiries regarding accommodated student testing.
  • Manage the hiring and training of testing support staff (readers, scribes and proctors).
  • Ensure that students are receiving all of their accommodations for testing.
  • Research, train and collaborate with faculty on testing best practices.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equity and inclusion and promote serving the whole student as a valued individual.
  • Assist students with developing skills to self-advocate for their educational goals.

Required

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

  • Master of Education, Special Education, Social Work, Disability, Counseling, Social Justice, Rehabilitation Counseling, Accessibility degree or a related field from an accredited institution, OR Bachelor’s degree in any of the above fields or a related field from an accredited institution and two years’ experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Experience working with people with disabilities in an educational setting, preferably in higher education.
  • Strong understanding of disability law at the state and federal level including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive learning and work environment; ability to work effectively with students, families, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of accessibility auditing and testing tools and strategies.
  • Understanding of assistive technology solutions for persons with disabilities. Ability to manage and troubleshoot technical issues for assistive technologies, including hardware and software. Advanced computer knowledge, proficiency, and skills. Must be able to function in both a Mac and PC environment.

Preferred

  • Experience implementing or practicing Universal Design for Learning in a classroom or professional environment.
  • Experience implementing or practicing critical pedagogy within a classroom or professional environment.
  • Experience developing support programming for students or individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience working with, prescribing, training, or interacting with Assistive Technology.
  • Experience working with screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and others.
