Job Summary
The Harris-Stowe State University TRIO Educational Talent Search Program serves 635 students from the Normandy, Jennings, and Riverview School Districts. TRIO Educational Talent Search works with low-income, first-generation, and/or academically disadvantaged middle and high school students to help them develop the skills needed to become successful college students. Under direct supervision, the Educational Advisor serves as part of a team of liaisons between the Educational Talent Search Program and target schools, facilitates career and college information workshops, obtains student progress information, monitors and supports student academic performance, and recruitment of new students. Regular travel off-campus to school sites and occasional evening, weekend, or overnight hours are required. The Educational Advisor works to provide opportunities for Educational Talent Search participants to develop social skills, cultural competence, study skills, and academic skills appropriate for their educational goals. In addition, the Educational Advisor assists in planning, organizing, and presenting group workshops, summer program planning, supervising participants’ attendance at cultural events, and assisting with the recruitment, selection, and retention process.
Essential Functions
- Program Support:
- Assist in the development and implementation of educational and cultural enrichment activities and workshops.
- Guide students in managing the collection of required documentation and submitting it to the appropriate staff.
- Develop and implement services that support students in entering and graduating from college.
- Exercise professional judgment and discretion to effectively deliver services to participants and their families.
- Collaborate with target schools to deliver precollege services that address critical academic needs.
- Maintain and update ETS social media platforms with relevant academic information, coordinating with the Marketing department.
- Monitor and manage the ETS TRIO email account.
- Liaison to Target Schools:
- Consult with high school and middle school counselors to address student needs effectively.
- Provide academic assistance to eligible students participating in the ETS program.
- Support student recruitment, career planning, and personal development activities.
- Monitor on-campus and off-campus retention activities to ensure accurate participation tracking.
- Assist in planning and chaperoning field trips and college tours.
- Provide guidance to students regarding cultural activities and workshops.
- Communicate program information to participants, parents, and school counselors.
- Summer Enrichment Staff Supervision:
- Assist in the training, monitoring, and supervision of dormitory staff.
- Supervise and manage residential workshops and activities during summer programs.
- Evaluate and escalate concerns or infractions to the Director as needed.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education, student affairs, psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of experience working with underrepresented populations, first-generation students, or secondary and higher education programs focused on student development and academic initiatives.

- Experience working with, and sensitive to the needs of people facing similar barriers to those confronting the programs target population – required;
- Applicant who has succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the programs targeted population; and
- Reliable transportation.

- Work is routinely performed in a professional office environment.
- This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and other similar machines.
