About The Role
As an Engineering Lead on the Continuous Improvement team, you will help us design, build, and sustain groundbreaking additive manufacturing solutions ranging from new printers to new ways to clean parts.
The Continuous Improvement team has a wide variety of responsibilities, including leading new product introduction (NPI) with Manufacturing, developing new product variations, designing new features for current products, and adapting current products for long-term production in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
As a member of a tight-knit and cross-functional hardware team, you’d contribute ideas and develop practical solutions to an evolving list of never before seen challenges. Your work will help ensure that we deliver great products and delight our customers while changing the world of additive manufacturing.
Note: This role is based in our Redwood City office and requires a hybrid at home/in office engagement.
You will…
- Own design and architecture of complex parts and subassemblies and potentially lead projects.
- Perform engineering analysis of parts and assemblies that can include: detailed tolerance, safety, thermal, stress, fatigue, lifetime, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
- Collaborate directly with Industrial Design, Electrical, Optical, Software, and other engineering teams to create engineering requirements, implement designs, and troubleshoot issues.
- Collaborate with Operations, such as Sourcing, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, Production, and Field Service to support released products, ensure continued production, and troubleshoot issues seen during assembly and in the field.
- Create and maintain clear engineering specifications and documentation to enable effective knowledge transfer throughout the company.
- Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing throughout development to ensure quality and performance
You have…
- B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree.
- 7+ years experience successfully taking mechanical designs from concept to production.
- Strong ability to perform engineering analysis of parts and assemblies that can include: detailed tolerance, safety, thermal, stress, fatigue, lifetime, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
- Understanding of product quality metrics and methods including GD&T, DFMEA, Statistical Process Control (SPC)
- A strong desire and ability to mentor, inspire, and work with junior engineers.
- Experience collaborating directly with cross functional engineering teams to create engineering requirements, implement designs, and troubleshoot issues.
- Experience in material selection in sheet metal, metal, plastic, and elastomers.
- Strong familiarity with sheet metal fabrication methods, plastic injection molding, casting, and CNC machining.
- Experience managing complex supplier relationships, particularly with high-mix-low-volume suppliers, including those located in southeast Asia (China, Malaysia, and others). Overseas travel 2-3 times per year would be required.
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to present and defend design decisions to leadership.
- Experience driving designs to schedules and providing schedule input to project managers.

At Carbon, we look at the person holistically and carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining salary. The compensation bracket for this position is $191,000 – $229,200 per year. Your actual salary will be based on your experience, work location, certifications and the unique skills you bring to the role.
