The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Manager, People Services, The Advisor, Health and Safety is responsible to ensure that health and safety services are developed and implemented to all stakeholders effectively and efficiently, through Corporate Health and Safety oversight across all Departments within the Town of Caledon. The Advisor is responsible to provide timely and effective consultative advice in all matters of Occupational Health and Safety to the Chief Human Resources Officer, Office of the CAO, and manage the Town’s Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP), reviews. The Advisor ensures that health and safety is integrated into daily supervisory and management practices to prevent injury/illness to employees, volunteers, contractors, and the public; supporting workers and Supervisors to act in a safe manner; to prevent fiscal and reputational loss to the Town; and to prevent damage to Town owned equipment and facilities.

As the Advisor, Health and Safety you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

Functional Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain compliance with new and existing provincial health and safety legislation, provincial and regional public health requirements, corporate and departmental policies, and procedures, identify areas of non-compliance and review/recommend corrective action(s). Working knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, operational policies and procedures, and the ability to interpret and communicate their significance and relevance to municipal workplace situations.
  • Interprets and monitors safety compliance with operating divisions through audit, consultation with Managers and risk/hazard assessments with workers and Supervisors.
  • Liaise with Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, Skills and Development (MLITSD) in follow-up to inspections, investigations, or orders and with WSIB account managers, eligibility adjudicators, and nurse case clinicians to avoid fines for late filing, claims management and control of injury costs.
  • Responsible for maintaining and revising all content (new and updates/revisions) for health and safety related policies, procedures and forms on the Town intranet, the Advisor is also responsible for posting and maintaining required OHSA and JHSC information on Vector Solutions LMS for Caledon Fire and Emergency Services.
  • Investigates, communicates, and follows-up with internal and external stakeholders (injured workers, Supervisors, Managers, WSIB, and third parties) in timely management of claims, including WSIB policy, forms, and reporting of medical information, modified duty work plans, status of return to work, lost time.
  • Researches and applies current training and development principles and delivery methods for adult and young worker learning. Develops instructional/training programs to meet or exceed identified needs to ensure the safety of staff, and to reduce or eliminate injuries, the interruption of productivity, and/or financial and reputational loss.
  • Scheduling, recording, tracking and monitoring of corporate health and safety training, to ensure most current information is available in the event of an investigation. Entry and maintenance of Town supported training within the HRIS by requesting the setup of codes for all training that staff may attend (HRdownloads, OGRA, OBC, IHSA etc.) to ensure the integrity and completeness of an electronic snapshot of training is available in one location, if required by a supervisor or MLITSD.

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an experienced professional with a post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or closely related field. Our ideal candidate has minimum 5 years of experience in Health and Safety.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge in corporate core competencies including employment standards/human resources principles, customer service principles, crisis prevention and stress management principles, defusing unwanted behaviours, and conflict management. We are seeking an individual who has skill in adult learning principles with proven ability to develop, tailor and facilitate occupational health and safety training, as well as other legislative training (as may be required) to operating divisions and key stakeholders (Senior Leadership, People Leaders, etc.).

The successful candidate for Advisor, Health and Safety will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).

This position offers a salary range of $96,512.66 to $120,640.83 plus a competitive benefit package.
