Project Engineer

Role overview

This position is for a Project Engineer based at a shipyard in San Diego, California, supporting engineering work for complex maritime systems. The role sits within the Engineering department and carries responsibility for guiding design development and technical delivery for assigned projects. Compensation is set at $130,000 to $160,000 annually, depending on experience.

The job calls for someone who can manage technical scope, coordinate with multiple internal and external stakeholders, and ensure that engineering output aligns with customer needs, quality expectations, budget limits, and delivery timelines. The work involves close collaboration with shipyard teams, customers, program management, marketing, vendors, purchasing, and production personnel.

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end technical execution of assigned engineering projects while keeping them within budget, scope, and schedule.
• Review customer purchase specifications and make sure the design complies with maritime rules, regulatory requirements, and classification society standards.
• Create design concepts and product specifications that satisfy functional, cost, and performance targets for marine applications.
• Provide direction and technical leadership to project and design engineers when needed.
• Prepare or supervise layout, detail, and assembly drawings, along with engineering calculations and supporting analyses.
• Select components, equipment, and materials for shipboard systems in coordination with suppliers and vendors.
• Work with shipyard operations and production teams to ensure fabrication and installation follow the intended design.
• Support proposals by estimating engineering hours and material requirements from customer and marketing inputs.
• Take part in design and technical reviews and help resolve engineering issues as they come up.
• Check and approve drawings and technical documents before they are released.
• Keep communication flowing across cross-functional teams so requirements and deliverables stay aligned.
• Handle additional duties that support department and company goals.

What we are looking for

• A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
• At least 5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic design for powered equipment or shipboard systems.
• Prior experience in maritime or shipbuilding work is mandatory.
• Solid knowledge of shipboard systems, marine equipment integration, and relevant standards and regulations such as ABS, USCG, and DNV.
• Willingness to travel on short notice when required.

Preferred capabilities

• Experience using CAD tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar software.
• Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting ability, and leadership qualities.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
• Comfort handling several priorities at once while still meeting deadlines and quality expectations.

Work conditions

The role includes long stretches of computer-based and desk-based work. Some travel to shipyards, suppliers, or customer locations may be needed from time to time.
