About the opportunity

Stena Line is offering a sea-based apprenticeship for aspiring deck trainees who want to build a career in maritime operations. The programme is designed to combine practical shipboard experience with structured learning, giving you exposure to real ferry operations while you develop the knowledge and confidence needed for the industry.

This apprenticeship is part of a Skills Development Program delivered under an Apprenticeship Agreement. It brings together workplace training and classroom study so you can develop technical know-how, practical ability, and the interpersonal skills required in a maritime environment.

The apprenticeship is scheduled to start on 21 September 2026.

What you will learn

  • How the maritime industry operates, including deck-related functions.
  • Ship security and onboard safety practices.
  • Literacy and numeracy as part of the classroom learning element.
  • Hands-on deck skills through real working experience.
  • Communication and teamwork skills that support a successful seafaring career.

Requirements

To be considered, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must be 18 years old at the time you submit your application.
  • You must have the legal right to work in the UK and be resident in the UK.
  • You should be able to communicate clearly and effectively in both spoken and written English.

Before training begins

Prior to starting onboard training on the ferry, apprentices will need to complete Basic STCW training and obtain an unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate.

Who this role suits

This opportunity is best suited to someone who is open to learning, positive in approach, comfortable with change, and able to connect well with others. Safety is a major responsibility for this role, both for passengers and for yourself, so a strong sense of responsibility is essential.

Application information

Applications must be submitted in English by 17 July 2026. The employer may close the vacancy earlier if there is a high level of interest, so applying promptly is recommended.

Applications will not be accepted by email or postal mail because of data protection requirements. Questions about the programme or recruitment process can be directed to the Talent Acquisition team at searecruitments@stenaline.com.

Recruitment and staffing agencies are requested not to contact the employer regarding this vacancy.
