Role overview

Smithville Communications is hiring a careful and safety-minded Utility Locator for its Jasper, Indiana location. In this field role, you will identify and mark underground fiber lines to reduce the risk of damage during digging and construction activity. The position requires handling both planned and urgent locate requests, making on-site judgments, and helping ensure utility markings are accurate and safe.

Key duties

• Use locating tools, paint, and flags to identify and mark buried fiber infrastructure.
• Interpret blueprints, as-built records, and GIS mapping data.
• Handle both routine and emergency 811 locate tickets in order of priority.
• Investigate locating challenges such as weak signals, broken tracer wires, and shifting site conditions.
• Speak with contractors, homeowners, businesses, and internal teams about marked utilities and field conditions.
• Record map discrepancies, uncertain field findings, and other important notes from the job site.
• Assist with after-hours locate work, joint utility projects, and mapping-related assignments when required.
• Work in accordance with 811 regulations, utility marking practices, and site safety rules.

Required profile

This position calls for a high school diploma or equivalent. Prior experience in utility locating or telecommunications is preferred. Applicants should understand 811 color codes and jobsite safety procedures, have a basic grasp of construction work, and be able to read GIS maps and engineering drawings. Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities are important. The role also requires outdoor work in varying conditions, a valid driver’s license with a safe driving history, and close, distance, color, and depth vision. A pre-employment drug screen and background check are mandatory.

Working conditions

This is a field-based position with time spent outdoors in changing weather and site environments, as well as driving between locations and completing administrative work. Regular walking, standing, and bending are part of the job, along with occasional lifting. Overtime, evening shifts, and weekend work may be necessary to respond to urgent locate requests or business demands.
