Role overview
AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for designing, planning, delivering, and running the global cloud infrastructure behind AWS. This work includes the data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling systems that keep services available for customers. The environment is complex and fast-moving, with many variables affecting the supply chain and operations.
You will work within a broad team that includes software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain experts, security professionals, operations leaders, and other critical specialists. The culture encourages inclusion, collaboration, bold thinking, and ownership through to completion.
About the role
As a Data Center Manager with AWS, you will help oversee some of the largest cloud infrastructure in the world. The role calls for a technical operations leader who can solve difficult problems, improve the way work is done, and support operational excellence across all areas of responsibility.
What the role involves
- Lead, coach, and grow engineering teams while ensuring strong technical delivery and high performance.
- Oversee the upkeep of existing co-located and internally managed data centers.
- Support the construction and launch of new data centers.
- Continuously review and improve processes and procedures to raise operational standards.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, contractors, and other partners.
- Work closely with internal teams and leadership groups.
- Ensure data center operations meet and exceed local health and safety requirements.
- Build and maintain operational metrics and use them to drive improvements.
- Support service management practices such as incident handling, problem resolution, change management, and capacity management.
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate brings hands-on leadership experience, particularly in data center environments, and is comfortable balancing people management, operational discipline, and technical problem-solving. A strong interest in technology and a drive to deliver excellent work every day are important.
Experience and capability expectations
You should have led a team of at least five people for a minimum of three years. Experience improving the performance of an existing team, building or scaling a team, and handling both high-performing and lower-performing employees is valuable. Conflict management skills are also beneficial.
You should be comfortable handling high-severity incidents, understanding wider outage impact, and evaluating the consequences of different recovery paths. Experience with change management and fault management is also expected.
Vendor and contractor management experience is important, including the ability to resolve issues and disagreements effectively when working with external partners.
Process improvement experience is highly relevant. You should be able to take both effective and ineffective processes, map them, improve them, and implement corrective steps that benefit the wider business. Experience with Kaizen, Lean, or Six Sigma methods is preferred.
Health and safety leadership is a core part of the role, and you should be able to positively shape safety culture within the data center organization.
