Where you'll work

ملازمت کی تفصیل

About the team

You’ll be part of Hamilton City Council’s Community Group, which brings together services that support local life, including Hamilton Pools, Parks and Recreation, Hamilton City Libraries, and the city’s three major visitor attractions. The Parks and Recreation team looks after Hamilton’s park network so the city stays attractive, welcoming, active, and aligned with community needs.

The opportunity

As a Parks Labourer, also known as a Parks Landscaper, you’ll help care for and improve Hamilton’s green spaces, sports areas, playgrounds, and other council assets. Your work will directly support community wellbeing and contribute to the council’s goal of making Hamilton the best place to live.

What you’ll do

  • Carry out routine safety and maintenance work across parks, playgrounds, and sporting venues.
  • Make sure all work is completed to a strong standard for safety, quality, and appearance.
  • Work with contractors and the wider Parks and Recreation team to deliver day-to-day tasks.
  • Handle tasks both alone and with others, while keeping to deadlines.
  • Interact with the public in a courteous, helpful, and professional way.
  • Keep a service-minded approach by considering the needs of park and facility users.
  • Collect park rubbish and clear ground litter.

What we’re looking for

  • A positive attitude, willingness to get stuck in, and a solid work ethic.
  • Confidence working on your own and as part of a team.
  • A sharp eye for detail and a commitment to high-quality results.
  • Strong organisation and time management skills.
  • Clear communication and good people skills.
  • A genuine interest in improving public spaces and supporting the community.

Skills and experience

  • Current full NZ driver licence, with Class 2 required.
  • Current first aid certificate.
  • Background in parks maintenance.
  • Experience with general maintenance or handyperson work.
  • Ability to plan work carefully and carry out different work programmes using available resources.
  • Good physical fitness and the ability to manage manual labour demands.
  • Comfortable balancing several priorities while still delivering quality service.
  • Flexible and adaptable when work demands or volumes change.
  • Capable of working alone and within a team.
  • Interest in continuous improvement, practical problem-solving, and efficient delivery.
  • Ability to think quickly and find solutions that work well for customers and the team.

Pay and benefits

The starting pay is $28.95 per hour, depending on your skills and experience.

  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Two wellbeing days each year.
  • Free health insurance through Unimed, including hospital/surgery cover and discounted family membership rates.
  • Free yearly health checks and flu vaccinations.
  • Option to buy extra annual leave.
  • Reimbursement for eye tests and glasses costs.
  • Discounted offers from local businesses such as gyms, cafes, dentists, hairdressers, and more.

Application process

To apply, you’ll need to submit your application and, if you want to include a cover letter, combine it with your CV in a single PDF file or use the message box for the hiring team. Applications close on 26 June 2026, and shortlisting may begin before the closing date.

Other information

The council is committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi through its relationships with Kiingitanga, Waikato Tainui, mana whenua, and maataa waka in Hamilton Kirikiriroa.

Successful candidates will be advised by email. Those shortlisted will go through interviews, reference checks, and a criminal check. Because this is a safety-sensitive role, a pre-employment medical assessment, including drug and alcohol testing, will also be required.

If you need any adjustments or access support during the selection process, you are encouraged to let the council know in advance so suitable arrangements can be made.

The council promotes a welcoming and inclusive workplace where people are respected, valued, and able to belong. It values Kotahitanga and the different perspectives, experiences, and abilities people bring.

This vacancy is being filled directly. If recruitment agency support is required, the council will use its selected agency panel and will not accept responsibility for or pay any unsolicited fees or commissions.
