Role overview
This position leads the food service function at a school site in Eastern Region, Uganda. The Kitchen Manager is accountable for the day-to-day running of the kitchen, including meal production, service quality, team supervision, sanitation, inventory control, and compliance with safety and organizational standards. The role combines hands-on kitchen support with site-level leadership in a busy, student-focused environment.
What you will do
- Direct the full food preparation and service process to ensure meals meet standards for quality, safety, and correct portioning.
- Coach, assign, and oversee kitchen staff on recipes, equipment use, and sanitation practices.
- Prepare routine paperwork, schedules, and operational reports on a daily and weekly basis.
- Track supplies, manage stock levels, and handle ordering, receiving, and storage procedures properly.
- Keep kitchen equipment clean and flag maintenance or repair concerns when needed.
- Apply HACCP requirements, public health rules, and ServSafe-aligned food safety practices.
- Manage labor planning so staffing levels remain aligned with operational needs and budget limits.
- Ensure company policies are followed and performance reviews are completed fairly and consistently.
- Maintain temperature records, cleaning logs, and other required food safety documentation.
- Carry out cash handling and reconciliation tasks accurately.
- Serve as the primary on-site leader for smooth, safe, and efficient kitchen operations.
- Complete assigned reports and other tasks within required timelines.
- Support the school and food service program with additional duties as needed.
Qualification requirements
- High school diploma or an equivalent qualification is required.
- ServSafe certification is required, or the candidate must be willing to obtain it before joining.
- Previous experience in food service is necessary; experience in school nutrition is an advantage.
- Supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience in inventory control and ordering is preferred.
- Strong communication, organization, multitasking, and time management skills are needed.
- Reliable transportation is required.
- Comfort with working in a school setting and around children is essential.
- A background check and fingerprint screening must be passed.
- Experience using POS systems and online reporting tools is preferred.
- Basic math ability and computer literacy are required.
Work conditions
- This is a full-time on-site role, typically running Monday to Friday, with occasional extended weeks when required.
- The job involves standing for the entire shift and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent walking, bending, reaching, and hand use are part of the role.
- Work takes place in a moderately noisy, fast-moving kitchen environment.
- Participation in company meetings or training sessions may be required.
