Engineering Manager

Role overview

Join Biffa’s engineering and maintenance operation at the Horsham plant as an Engineering Manager. This is a prominent leadership position at one of the UK’s largest materials recovery facilities. The site operates around the clock, every day except Christmas Day.

What you’ll do

You will lead the onsite engineering function, building a team that works safely, performs strongly and keeps plant uptime high. The role calls for someone who can guide people, strengthen skills, and introduce better ways of working to improve overall engineering standards.

You will work closely with stakeholders, stay calm and clear in communication during busy periods, and become a key member of the site leadership group. The position reports to the regional engineering manager.

Core responsibilities

• Direct, develop and support a multi-skilled engineering team, encouraging ownership, accountability and strong results.
• Establish and sustain a robust safety mindset while ensuring engineering and health & safety requirements are fully followed.
• Improve equipment reliability through effective preventative maintenance and keep planned maintenance compliance above 95%.
• Cut down breakdowns and reactive repairs to raise plant availability and site performance.
• Oversee contractors, making sure work is delivered safely and to the required standard.
• Use root cause analysis to identify underlying issues and put in place durable engineering fixes.
• Organise and refine shutdown work so downtime and operational risk are reduced.
• Take responsibility for engineering operating costs, contribute to capital planning, apply engineering standards and ensure best practice is used consistently.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will bring prior experience in engineering or maintenance leadership, along with practical health and safety management experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting. A relevant engineering or asset management qualification is required.

You should also have strong presentation and communication abilities, experience handling budgets and P&L, and confidence using Microsoft tools. Familiarity with tools such as Trello and Slack is helpful, though the ability to learn new systems is also important.
