ملازمت کی تفصیل

Role overview

The Convenor supports restorative justice work within Youth Justice by bringing together the people affected by a young person’s offending and helping them agree on a response that repairs harm, supports reintegration into the community, and helps reduce re-offending. The position also includes running conferences as an approved Convenor under the Youth Justice Act 1992.

Key duties

  • Apply strong cultural capability, or actively build it, to help maintain an inclusive workplace that reflects the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports programs and community partnerships that protect cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Lead and coordinate restorative justice matters involving young people, victims, and other relevant parties, including referrals, participant identification, and arrangement of conferences.
  • Handle issues, tensions, and complications that may arise at any point in the restorative justice process.
  • Review and help monitor whether restorative justice conference agreements are practical, suitable, and being followed.
  • Connect victims with appropriate support services, make referrals where needed, and liaise with counsellors and other service providers supporting participation in the process.
  • Prepare written and verbal advice for courts, agencies, and other stakeholders in line with statutory, legislative, policy, and procedural obligations, and make external referrals to support services.
  • Work effectively with colleagues to achieve positive outcomes for victims, young people, families, and the wider community, including guiding and supporting trainee convenors.
  • Build and sustain productive relationships with external stakeholders, which may include delivering information sessions for government and non-government organisations and other relevant groups.
  • Promote restorative justice approaches that are culturally appropriate, collaborative, evidence-based, and aligned with Youth Justice strategic priorities.
  • Take part in ongoing professional development, including training and accreditation, to strengthen capability and support organisational goals.
  • Engage in reflective practice, including debriefing with internal and external stakeholders, victims, and other restorative justice team members.
  • Help foster a departmental environment that communicates respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and demonstrates understanding of cultural protocols and the effects of historical policies and practices.
