About the Role and Organization
The ACT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) functions under the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1990 with the purpose of initiating, managing, and overseeing prosecutions and associated legal proceedings in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The office consists of an independent statutory Director appointed by the ACT Executive and supporting staff governed by the Public Sector Management Act 1994. The ODPP prioritizes delivering an impartial, skilled, and efficient prosecution service to the ACT community while adhering to the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct.
Responsibilities
The Criminal Practice division manages prosecutions from initial appearances through to resolution in both the Magistrates and Supreme Courts. It comprises multiple smaller teams each supervised by an experienced prosecutor. This division undertakes a wide variety of criminal cases, including but not limited to drug violations, traffic infractions, domestic and sexual violence cases, fraud, dishonesty, and crimes involving personal harm or violence. Most advocacy work occurs in the Magistrates Court, while opportunities exist to conduct or direct cases in the Supreme Court.
Candidate Eligibility and Requirements
- Applicants must be admitted or eligible to practice law in the ACT jurisdiction.
- Successful applicants will need to pass a pre-employment National Police Check.
