Role overview
This senior advisory position sits within the Office of the Deputy Secretary (Pou Whakatere) Strategy in Wellington. The role is centered on helping shape important decisions across New Zealand’s justice system by translating complex, fast-moving issues into practical advice for senior leaders.
You will act as a connector across the group, identifying what matters most, aligning related workstreams, highlighting risks, and ensuring priority work continues to progress. The role calls for strong judgment, evidence-based thinking, and the ability to support improvements in justice outcomes for everyone.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare robust strategic advice for the Deputy Secretary, Director, and other senior leaders.
- Coordinate responses to emerging issues, risks, and high-priority tasks.
- Convert research, data, and insight into clear recommendations that support decision-making.
- Oversee the quality of ministerial servicing, reporting, and Official Information Act work across the office.
- Align planning, performance, and risk activities across the Strategy group.
- Guide and support advisors, helping strengthen quality, consistency, and capability across the team.
Skills and experience required
The Ministry is seeking a trusted and credible strategic adviser who can engage confidently with senior leadership in a complex environment.
- Substantial experience giving strategic advice to senior leaders in large or complex organisations.
- Ability to think across the enterprise, connect work between teams, and influence results.
- Strong understanding of public sector systems and processes, including ministerial servicing and machinery of government.
- Proven ability to pull together data, research, and insights into concise, persuasive advice.
- Leadership capability with experience coaching others, influencing teams, and raising performance.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, including work with executive-level contacts.
- Good judgment and the ability to work through ambiguity and competing demands.
- Experience coordinating planning, reporting, and risk management activities.
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ability to apply te ao Māori perspectives in practice.

Salary
The salary range for this position is $130,129 to $179,192, depending on skills and experience.
