Role overview
Royal Mail is hiring a Postal Delivery Driver, also known as a Postie, for its Skipton Delivery Office. This is a permanent position focused on collecting, sorting, and delivering letters and parcels while representing a trusted local service across the community.
Location and contract
The role is based at Skipton Delivery Office, BD23 2DG. It is a permanent contract with full-time hours of 37 per week. The rota follows 5 days out of 7, Monday to Sunday, with working windows between 07:30 - 15:30 and 13:30 - 21:00. You will work on a rotating shift pattern, including weekends, and your routes and hours may change depending on demand. Sunday working is required at Keighley Delivery Office.
Pay and hours
The pay rate is £13.68 per hour, with monthly pay and paid overtime available. The role involves active, hands-on work in a fast-moving environment.
Key duties
- Prepare letters and parcels at the delivery office before heading out on route
- Complete deliveries by van and on foot across the local area
- Maintain positive customer relationships while on route
- Carry out work outdoors regardless of weather conditions
What the role involves
You will be delivering more than standard mail, including exam results, birthday cards, business parcels, and other important items that matter to customers and businesses. The job can be demanding, but it is also rewarding and community-focused.
Working style and expectations
This is a physically demanding role with a busy pace, particularly during peak periods. You should be prepared for long walks of up to 12 miles or 20,000+ steps, daily van driving, exposure to all weather conditions, and time-sensitive delivery targets.
Candidate profile
Royal Mail provides full training, a uniform, and a red delivery van. To succeed in the role, you will need a full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points, and it must be registered to your current name and address. You must also be willing to drive a Royal Mail van each day and pass a driving assessment.
You should be physically fit enough to walk long distances, climb stairs and hills, and lift or carry mailbags weighing 10kg or more. The company is looking for someone who is dependable, self-driven, organised, resilient, and comfortable working independently outdoors. A customer-first attitude and pride in service are also important.
Benefits
- 22.5 days of holiday, increasing with service, adjusted for part-time or fixed-term arrangements where applicable
- Career progression and development opportunities
- Pension benefits and 24/7 wellbeing support, including online GP access
- Family-friendly workplace policies
- MyBundle+ savings and offers on everyday purchases, outings, and more
- Discounts on RMG products and free stamps at Christmas
Additional information
For candidate search purposes, roles with 35 to 37 hours per week are shown as full-time. However, any role under 37 hours per week is treated as part-time in the employment contract.
As a Postie, you are expected to deliver all items on your route securely, including election materials and certain regulated items such as food products or alcohol, in line with business standards.
The application process does not require a CV. Candidates complete an online test first, followed by an interview with the hiring manager.
