Role overview

CPKC is looking for train conductors to join its Medicine Hat, Alberta operations for an August 2026 start. This union role is a key part of train and yard operations and involves working safely as part of a crew that switches rail cars, assembles or breaks down trains, and moves cars between rail yards.

The position is safety-sensitive and requires strong situational awareness, the ability to work outdoors in all weather, and readiness for irregular schedules, overnight work, and extended time away from home. The role also offers a pathway to advancement into Yard Foreperson, Locomotive Engineer, or leadership positions.

What you will do

As part of the crew, you will follow route-specific instructions, coordinate railcar switching, interpret and communicate signals, and ensure train movements are carried out safely and accurately. You will also be responsible for documenting train orders and switch lists, preparing reports, and responding to emergency situations when required.

Work environment

This job involves physically demanding tasks, shift work in a 24/7 environment, and work in outdoor conditions. You may need to report to work within a two-hour call window after scheduled rest and can expect shifts lasting up to 12 hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Travel for this role is expected to be very high, at 90–100%.

Training and pay

CPKC provides 16 weeks of paid classroom and field training focused on safety, rules, and operations. During classroom training, pay starts at 80% of the job rate, equal to $205.69 per day, and rises to 90% of the job rate, equal to $231.40 per day, after successful completion of the classroom portion and Part II exams. The company states that a qualified conductor can earn $85,000 in the first year.

Pre-employment checks

This position requires successful completion of a medical and drug assessment before hiring. The assessment includes physical, vision, hearing, alcohol, and drug screening, along with a negative company drug test. Additional drug testing may also take place after hire.

A background review will also be completed, including criminal history, education verification, and confirmation of driver’s licence and driving history.
