Role overview

Eight Sleep is hiring a Research Associate to take ownership of research study operations across internal product validation, prototype testing, feature development, and larger external validation studies. This is a hands-on role that combines data collection, study coordination, participant communication, and compliance with human research standards. The position reports to the Senior Director of Science & Clinical Research on the Research & Development team.

The role also offers room to grow into areas such as experimental design, white paper and peer-reviewed paper writing, sensor engineering, and coding/data analysis.

What you will do

• Recruit, screen, and schedule study participants, while helping build and improve beta tester and lab tester databases.
• Run the daily operations of research studies, including IRB submissions, coordination, reminders, calls, and equipment ordering.
• Spend a large share of time collecting data, potentially 80–90% of working hours, to support product decision timelines.
• Handle study setup and participant communication during weeknights between 6 PM and 9 PM, and monitor study data over weekends.
• Maintain study files and regulatory documentation in line with IRB and HIPAA requirements.
• Check collected data for completeness and accuracy, and follow up with participants to resolve issues or clarify responses.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-moving research environment with frequent schedule changes. Strong communication skills, good time management, and the ability to adapt quickly are essential. The role also requires willingness to work nights and weekends, travel locally to participants’ homes for setup, and perform light physical tasks such as moving a Pod cover and sheets.

Preferred background and growth areas

There is potential to develop expertise in experimental design, scientific writing, sensor engineering, and coding or data analysis. Prior exposure to startup environments, wearable or medical devices, decentralized and in-person research studies, Python, and consent/HIPAA processes is especially valuable.
