Royal Mail is hiring a Postie / Postal Delivery Driver in Alton to carry letters and parcels across the local area. This permanent role keeps you active, connected with the community, and involved in a job that combines routine with variety.

Location and contract

The position is based at Alton Delivery Office, GU34 1AA. It is offered as a permanent contract.

Pay and working pattern

The rate of pay is £13.68 per hour, with wages paid monthly and paid overtime available. The role is scheduled for 37 hours per week, spread across 5 days out of 7 from Monday to Sunday, with working hours expected to run from 07:00 to 14:45. Shift times and routes are arranged on a rota basis and can change depending on operational demand. Sunday working at Alton Delivery Office is required on a rota basis.

What the job involves

This role includes sorting mail at the delivery office, transporting post by van and on foot, building good customer relationships, and working outdoors in all weather conditions. The job is not only about letters and parcels, but also about delivering items that matter to people, such as exam results, birthday cards, business deliveries, and other important post.

Daily demands

The work is physically active and fast-moving. You should be prepared for long walking routes of up to 12 miles or more than 20,000 steps a day, daily driving of a Royal Mail van, handling large volumes of parcels and letters, and managing busy, time-sensitive days, especially during peak periods.

About you

Full training, a uniform, and a Royal Mail van will be provided. To succeed in the role, you need a full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points, and it must be registered in your current name and address. You must also be willing and able to drive the van every day and pass a driving assessment. The role suits someone who is physically fit, comfortable with stairs, hills, and lifting or carrying mailbags of 10 kg or more. Reliability, self-motivation, strong organisation, resilience, customer focus, and comfort with independent outdoor work are all important.

Additional notes

For search purposes, roles of 35 to 37 hours per week may be shown as full-time, although any contract below 37 hours per week is treated as part-time in the employment contract. Posties are expected to deliver all items securely on their routes, including election materials and certain regulated items such as food products or alcohol, in line with business standards.
