Role overview

The World Bank Group is seeking a Driver to join the Administrative and Client Support team in its Bissau Country Office. This position supports the daily movement of staff and visitors, helps maintain office operations, and contributes to the smooth execution of country-level activities in Guinea-Bissau. The assignment is for a fixed term of 3 years.

About the context

The World Bank Group is a global partnership of five institutions focused on reducing extreme poverty and expanding shared prosperity. In Western and Central Africa, the Country Management Unit oversees work across Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, Cabo Verde, and The Gambia through offices in Dakar, Nouakchott, Bissau, Praia, and Banjul.

Guinea-Bissau is described as a fragile West African state with a very low human development index. The country office operates in a complex environment and supports a sizable portfolio of projects across energy, transport, health, education, social protection, governance, and regional operations. Portuguese is the main language used with government officials, local partners, and stakeholders, so strong Portuguese communication is essential.

Key duties

  • Transport staff and teams to meetings, field visits, and other official destinations while maintaining a professional standard.
  • Carry out daily driving assignments in line with World Bank procedures, road safety standards, and security expectations so passengers feel safe and protected.
  • Remain alert during senior management visits in The Gambia and handle airport-related delays by gathering flight information and coordinating next steps with the Administration Unit.
  • Keep the assigned vehicle clean, roadworthy, and properly documented, including mileage and fuel usage records.
  • Monitor the vehicle’s condition closely and take preventive action on mechanical issues, from engine care to checking tyre pressure, oil, brakes, and water levels.
  • Deliver and collect correspondence for government offices and other stakeholders, including visa submissions to embassies.
  • Support follow-up on tax exemptions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, VAT exemption matters, and vehicle registration and plate number processing.
  • Use diplomacy and tact when dealing with ministries and embassies, working with Administration to close out matters on time.
  • Handle any fiduciary or related administrative tasks assigned by the Admin Unit.

Requirements

  • High school education is required.
  • At least 5 years of professional driving experience is needed, along with working knowledge of auto mechanics.
  • Good knowledge of Cabo Verde’s geography is expected; familiarity with Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, and The Gambia is an advantage.
  • A valid driving document for the sub-region is required, along with a licence for 4x4 vehicles and minibuses and a recent medical fitness certificate confirming the ability to drive.
  • First aid training from the Red Cross would be beneficial.
  • Training in auto mechanics and any additional technical training in electronics or electricity would be an asset.
  • Experience in an international institution would be an advantage.
  • English and Portuguese are required in both spoken and written form.
  • Working knowledge of computers and MS Office is desirable.
