About the company
This opportunity is with a fast-growing engineering consultancy supporting expansion in New Zealand’s gold mining industry. The business is seeing strong project demand and is looking to bring in a junior-to-intermediate mechanical engineer who can work closely with a Chartered Professional Engineer and develop quickly through practical mentorship and varied project work.
This role is well suited to an ambitious engineer who wants broad exposure, stronger technical capability, and a clear pathway for career advancement.
Role overview
You will contribute to mechanical, structural steel, and industrial engineering projects while building your experience across design, documentation, site work, and client interaction. The position offers hands-on involvement and the chance to support the delivery of work from concept through to project completion.
Key duties
- Create 3D CAD models, along with component, assembly, fabrication, and dimensional drawings.
- Perform engineering calculations, design verification, and analysis under the supervision of a Chartered Professional Engineer.
- Help deliver mechanical, structural steel, and industrial engineering assignments.
- Draft technical reports, engineering records, inspection notes, and other project deliverables.
- Carry out site inspections, measurements, and check-ups to collect information and confirm design details.
- Organize project files and supporting documents, including drawings, calculations, photographs, load information, and design assumptions.
- Join client discussions and assist with technical problem-solving and coordination.
- Work with clients, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to keep projects moving efficiently.
- Help improve templates, standard operating procedures, and quality systems to support consistency and faster turnaround.
- Take responsibility for allocated tasks and complete work accurately and within deadlines.
What you need to bring
The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent BTEC qualification, and have around 3 or more years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, industrial engineering, or heavy equipment environments.
You should be comfortable with practical, hands-on problem solving and have experience working with 3D CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks. Exposure to AS/NZS design standards is also important.
Strong capability in preparing calculations, reports, and technical documents is required, along with a solid understanding of fabrication, mechanical systems, and structural steel. Good communication skills and the confidence to build relationships with clients will help you succeed. A self-driven approach and the ability to work independently and own outcomes are also essential.
