Role Overview

The Maintenance Worker helps keep the facility safe, functional, and well maintained across the building and surrounding property in Toronto, Ontario. The role involves routine inspections, minor repairs, cleanliness support, and collaboration with property and operations staff.

Key Duties

• Review washroom plumbing and look for leaks in fixtures or pipes.
• Inspect fire exit signs and replace any bulbs that are no longer working.
• Check fire alarm pull stations for damaged rods and replace parts when needed.
• Walk the exterior perimeter to identify vandalism or structural damage.
• Inspect outside glazing on the building.
• Wash the outdoor property areas, including the front sidewalk, fenced compound, and smoking zones.
• Check lighting in hostel and residential spaces and replace bulbs as required.
• Inspect dormitories and hallways for paint or plaster damage and complete repairs or touch-ups as needed.
• Test washroom fixtures and carry out repairs when necessary.
• Inspect and maintain fire doors.
• Clean courtyard areas and move garbage to the garbage compound.
• Help with linens and garbage handling when required.
• Complete assigned work orders.
• Support the Supervisor as needed.
• Keep the work area safe and clean.
• Carry out any other related duties assigned by the Property Manager.

• Participate in performance reviews after the first 3 months and then annually.
• Read, understand, and follow the Policy and Procedures Manual and Hostel Standards & Guidelines.
• Learn the Position Description & Operations Manual for the role.
• Offer practical suggestions to improve efficiency, working conditions, or procedures when appropriate.
• Attend approved seminars and training sessions when asked.
• Represent the organization professionally at all times.

Reporting and Working Relationships

This position reports to the Property Manager and works closely with Intake Workers, the Environmental Services Team, and the Housekeeping/Janitorial Supervisor. The role may also involve contact with supply deliveries.

Working Conditions

Working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with an unpaid meal break. The role is based throughout the full facility and surrounding property. Duties may involve industrial testing tools, painting and plastering, bending, twisting, lifting, ladder work, and fine motor tasks. The position requires lifting more than 30 pounds. Concentration needs are moderate to high, especially when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, or working with general tools.

Environment and Hazards

The job may involve exposure to unpleasant or challenging conditions such as garbage, odors, isolation, monotony, angry individuals, verbal abuse, toxic chemicals, varied weather, and washrooms with human waste. There is also a risk of moderate to severe injury or illness from physical attacks, infectious diseases, toxic chemicals, moving objects, sharp objects such as needle pricks, electrical hazards, and repetitive strain injuries affecting the back or wrist.

Health and Safety

• Follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations.
• Comply with the agency’s Health and Safety Program.
• Report accidents, injuries, and workplace hazards promptly.
• Conduct regular facility security and safety rounds according to policy.
• Follow all Health and Safety policies of the agency.

Qualifications

• More than 3 months but less than 1 year of related experience is required.
• Experience should include life skills and a general understanding of cleaning and maintenance practices.
• Completion of public school and/or high school is expected.
• Equivalent education and experience may also be considered.
• A satisfactory vulnerable sector police reference check dated within the last 6 months is required.

Compensation

The target pay range for this position is $25.28 to $25.65, with a maximum of $26.01. Placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role. Reasonable accommodation is available on request.
