Role overview
Sainsbury’s stores are busy, energetic places where every day brings something different and food sits at the centre of everything. These stores play an important part in the local community by offering good value, quality products, and excellent service. As a Home Delivery Driver, you will be a key part of making sure online customers receive the items they ordered from Sainsbury’s.
Eligibility
- You must be at least 18 years old and have held a full UK or EU driving licence for a minimum of 12 months, with no more than 6 points on it.
- As part of the hiring process, you will need to complete an online driving risk assessment. If you are successful, you will also complete a driving assessment when you start.
- You must already have the legal right to work in the UK.
What the role involves
- Operating a 3.5 tonne van to deliver groceries to customers’ homes safely, on schedule, and in good condition.
- Checking that the vehicle is tidy, organised, roadworthy, and that delivery trays or cases are secured before going out on the road.
- Providing excellent service to customers, answering questions, handling substitutions, and keeping them informed about delays.
- Learning about products, services, and promotions so you can make helpful recommendations.
- Helping out in other areas of the store whenever you are not on delivery duty.
What success looks like
- Being approachable, helpful, and genuinely focused on creating a great doorstep experience.
- Confidently driving a large vehicle in different settings, including busy streets, narrow lanes, and a range of residential locations.
- Thriving in a fast-moving, physically demanding, high-energy environment and using your own initiative to solve problems.
- Being able to work flexibly and productively across the store when needed, while learning new skills and adapting to different tasks.
- Feeling comfortable using digital tools and technology to do the job well, including handling shopping containers weighing up to 15 kg.
- Working in a safety-conscious driving environment, supported by in-cab AI cameras that monitor driving behaviour and help uphold road safety and defensive-driving standards.
Benefits
- A 10% colleague discount card at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Tu, and Habitat after four weeks, with 15% off at Sainsbury’s every Friday and Saturday.
- Free food and hot drinks for colleagues in all stores.
- Holiday entitlement based on hours worked, plus maternity and paternity leave.
- Pension support, with employer matching contributions between 4% and 7.5%.
- Access to Sainsbury’s share schemes with discounted share purchase opportunities.
- Shopping savings on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers, and more.
- Wellbeing support, including free access to a confidential Employee Assistance Programme.

Inclusion and support
Sainsbury’s aims to be a genuinely inclusive place to work and shop, where colleagues can reach their full potential and customers feel welcome.
The company offers a range of enhanced discretionary leave options for families, support for carers, and resources to help colleagues understand and carry out their roles effectively. Internal colleague networks are also used to improve representation and help remove barriers.
Development opportunities such as mentorship, training, and career progression pathways are available to support colleague growth. The business also celebrates diversity through initiatives and events that promote inclusion and respect.
As a Disability Confident Leader, the company says that candidates may be offered an interview through an online assessment process, with priority given to those who score highest and best match the essential criteria for the role.
Reasonable adjustments can be requested during the application or interview stages, and support will be provided where possible.
