Role overview
The Engineering Team Leader is accountable for the work output of a small engineering group and acts as the main point of contact for that team. The role focuses on guiding team health, improving execution, and helping others perform at their best rather than trying to be the strongest individual contributor on the team.
This position also includes hands-on product development work, with management taking about 30% of the time. A major part of the role is to redesign how engineering work is delivered by using autonomous agents as the default execution layer, building reusable workflows, and introducing verification loops to keep outcomes correct, secure, reliable, and scalable.
Key responsibilities
- Lead a small product engineering team of 3 to 5 engineers across backend and frontend work.
- Spend around 30% of the role on people management while staying active in product development for the rest of the time.
- Take part in hiring for the team and, when needed, support hiring efforts for other teams as well.
- Own onboarding for new engineers joining the team.
- Represent the team, strengthen collaboration, and help create a positive and productive team environment.
- Give regular, specific, and constructive feedback.
- Support the continued growth of each direct report and take responsibility for their career development.
- Coach team members and provide guidance to help them succeed.
- Rework engineering delivery so autonomous agents are used as the standard execution layer.
- Design and roll out agentic workflows from end to end, including spec, planning, execution, and verification.
- Create reusable agentic patterns and primitives in the codebase so they can be applied across multiple domains.
- Apply verification mechanisms such as tests, checks, evaluations, and guardrails to keep output accurate and dependable.
Requirements
- Prior experience leading an engineering team of at least 2 people.
- Strong background in backend development, especially with Elixir/Phoenix, Ruby, or functional programming.
- Clear commitment to living the company’s values within the team and across the wider organization.
- Deep engineering fundamentals and a history of delivering production systems that are secure, reliable, and scalable.
- Hands-on experience building or adopting automation or agentic workflows, or comparable systems, and improving them over time.
- Ability to reason in systems, write clear specifications, break work into plans, set up verification, and close quality gaps.
- Strong communication skills.
- Good grasp of engineering principles and best practices.
- Excellent organization and attention to detail.
- A process-minded approach that is efficient and people-first.
- Ability to inspire confidence and motivate others.
- Good understanding of team dynamics.

- Strong familiarity with automation and AI, with confidence using AI tools and concepts.
Practicals
You will report to the Engineering Manager and will lead 2 to 5 direct reports on the Engineering team. The job can be done from anywhere in the world, and the expected start is as soon as possible.

Compensation and benefits
The annual base salary for this full-time position is USD 75,450 to USD 169,700. Pay is determined by role level, location, transferable skills, experience, training, business needs, and market conditions, and the range may change. The company uses geographic pay ranges and may review compensation changes for internal moves on a case-by-case basis.
