Data Scientist

Role overview

We are looking for an experienced Data Scientist to join a growing data science function in Galway on a fixed-term maternity cover contract. The role is hybrid, with four days on site and one day working remotely each week.

You will work with large structured datasets and use advanced analytics, machine learning, and cloud-based tools to turn complex information into practical business insight. The position suits someone who enjoys solving difficult problems, building solutions from early ideas through to production, and contributing to data-led decisions across the organisation.

What you will do

• Use statistical methods, machine learning approaches, and cloud technologies to uncover value in large data sets.
• Take ownership of data science initiatives from initial idea through deployment and delivery of useful business insight.
• Work closely with Product, Engineering, and Data colleagues to define problems and shape analytical solutions.
• Explore, model, and interpret data to spot trends, patterns, and areas where performance can be improved.
• Create dashboards, reports, and visual stories that make findings clear for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Carry out data preparation, cleansing, modelling, prediction, clustering, and statistical analysis.
• Convert analytical results into recommendations that create measurable business impact.
• Help deploy machine learning solutions into live production environments at scale.
• Promote strong practices in data science, analytics, and machine learning across the team.

Experience and qualifications

A bachelor's or master's degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, or a similar field is required.

The ideal candidate will bring 3 to 5 years of professional experience in data science or advanced analytics, along with a solid grasp of supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques. You should be confident presenting model outputs to engineers, stakeholders, and business users, and have hands-on experience with statistical analysis, inference, predictive modelling, clustering, classification, regression, and anomaly detection.

Experience with both structured and unstructured datasets is important. Proficiency in Python and/or R, SQL, and visualisation tools such as Tableau is expected. You should also be able to explain complex analytical findings clearly and turn them into practical business recommendations.

Preferred background

Additional experience in predictive maintenance, reliability modelling, survivability analysis, or asset performance management would be a plus. Exposure to cloud-based data science and machine learning platforms is also desirable.

Project leadership experience, including planning, estimation, and stakeholder management, will be advantageous. Familiarity with data from engineering, manufacturing, industrial, transportation, automotive, or IoT environments would be beneficial. Postgraduate study in a relevant subject area is considered an added advantage.
