Senior Software Engineer - Fullstack PHP

About the role

Squiz’s product engineering group is expanding its cloud-first Digital Experience Platform, which includes content management, optimisation tools, AI conversation capabilities, and platform services. This permanent Senior Software Engineer position sits within the Product Engineering team and is centered on Matrix, Squiz’s flagship content management system.

The role calls for an experienced full-stack engineer who has spent years building and supporting enterprise software, with strong capability in PHP and AWS-based environments, plus practical experience across the wider application stack.

This opportunity is open to candidates based on the east coast of Australia. The working arrangement is hybrid, giving flexibility in where and when work gets done.

Responsibilities

• Build and improve application code that satisfies technical and product requirements.
• Work closely with teammates to shape user stories, acceptance criteria, and delivery estimates.
• Support and mentor junior engineers while also collaborating with senior peers.
• Create, update, and maintain technical documentation.
• Partner with Team Leads and Engineering Managers on technical roadmaps and delivery planning.
• Promote strong engineering standards across your team, including code quality, software design, and architecture.
• Contribute to the stack spanning PHP, AWS, and GitLab CI/CD.
• Work in a team of approximately 3 to 8 engineers, which may include a Team Lead, junior, mid-level, senior, and Technical Lead roles.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a similar discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 5 years of hands-on professional software development experience building and maintaining large-scale products.
• Strong full-stack capability with deep PHP and AWS expertise, along with solid experience in infrastructure as code, relational databases, DevOps, and front-end development.
• Practical experience with GitLab and containerization tools such as Docker.
• Sound knowledge of testing approaches and a track record of using testing strategies to strengthen quality and reliability.
• Experience working in Agile or other iterative delivery environments; Scrum is commonly used, with some teams operating Kanban.
• Strong awareness of secure coding practices, including standards such as OWASP.
• Proven ability to work independently on large-scale modernization initiatives.
• Nice-to-have experience with React, Node, GitLab, Dynatrace, and Cloudflare.
• Additional value is given to candidates familiar with content management systems, web development, enterprise DXP platforms, PHP production upgrades, monolith decomposition, and broader software modernization work.
