Junior Data Engineer

Role overview

This opportunity sits within a major UK public-sector data programme delivered by a leading global consultancy. The work focuses on building and improving the data foundations behind essential government services. It is a junior position with strong growth potential: you will be given practical responsibility from the outset, and onsite training will be provided to help you develop any missing technical skills as you progress.

Key responsibilities

The role involves hands-on work across data mapping, transformation, and operational support for live public-sector data flows. You will be expected to manage assigned engineering and analysis tasks with guidance from senior colleagues, build and maintain data pipelines in Azure Data Factory, and contribute to the full lifecycle from development through production support. The position also includes writing and tuning SQL for dependable data delivery, helping with data quality checks and testing, and preparing documentation that is clear enough for audit, compliance, and knowledge transfer purposes.

Essential experience and technical needs

Applicants should have strong SQL ability and be comfortable using it to solve real data issues. Some exposure to Azure Data Factory or other parts of the Azure ecosystem, such as Azure Functions, is required. Experience with NoSQL databases or Databricks would be beneficial, but it is not mandatory. The ideal candidate will be analytical, keen to learn, and able to adapt quickly. Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams are also important.

Eligibility

This role is open to UK-based candidates who already have the right to work in the UK. You must also be eligible for BPSS clearance at minimum, with SC clearance considered a significant advantage.

Additional information

You do not need to bring the complete technical stack to be considered. If your SQL is strong and you are motivated to develop further, structured onsite training will be provided to build your capability across the rest of the platform.
