Role Summary

This position is for a Lead Rendering Programmer to drive rendering innovation on Anvil, Ubisoft’s internal engine behind flagship franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Ghost Recon, and Rainbow Six. The role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering, with a strong focus on advancing water technology and shaping high-impact rendering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with Technical Directors and Technical Architects to turn high-level direction into practical technical plans.
  • Guide a strong rendering team through goal setting, regular feedback, career growth discussions, and performance management.
  • Influence technical choices across the rendering pipeline, ensuring a balance between new ideas and production realities.
  • Promote engineering standards and effective development practices across several production teams.
  • Contribute directly to production code by building and improving renderer systems, engine features, and content workflows.
  • Design rendering solutions that can scale across a variety of production needs.
  • Partner with artists, designers, and engineers to find opportunities for optimization and system refinement.
  • Explore, prototype, and implement advanced graphics features that move real-time rendering forward.
  • Review code carefully and mentor teammates to strengthen overall team capability.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience leading game programming teams with at least 5 direct reports.
  • At least 10 years of experience in graphics or rendering programming.
  • Successfully shipped a minimum of 2 AAA titles in a rendering engineering role.
  • Advanced expertise in C/C++ and strong multi-threading skills.
  • Deep understanding of modern graphics APIs such as DirectX 12, Vulkan, and Metal, along with shader programming.
  • Solid grasp of 3D mathematics, rendering algorithms, and core computer graphics principles.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in building software for multiple platforms, including PC, console, and mobile.
  • Strong knowledge of low-level optimization, memory handling, and hardware-specific performance tuning.
  • Practical experience with game engines such as Unreal, Unity, or proprietary engines.
  • Exposure to middleware integration and third-party rendering tools or solutions.
  • Proven work in areas like real-time ray tracing, global illumination, physically based rendering, or procedural generation.
