Opportunity
The Ministry of Justice in New Zealand is seeking a Test Engineer to join its Digital team in Wellington. This position is part of the Productivity & Collaboration Services Team and reports to the Technical Product Manager – Productivity. The role focuses on safeguarding the quality, dependability, and performance of solutions delivered across enterprise platforms such as Microsoft 365, Power Platform, Azure DevOps, and GitHub.
You will work alongside product managers, developers, business stakeholders, and end users to ensure solutions align with business needs and provide a smooth user experience. The role contributes both to project delivery and to ongoing improvement efforts, supporting the organisation’s goal of delivering modern, secure, and reliable digital services.

Responsibilities
- Design test plans and test strategies using business and technical requirements as the basis.
- Develop detailed test cases and scenarios that check functionality and user experience.
- Carry out manual and automated testing across functional, regression, integration, and performance areas.
- Find, record, prioritise, and track defects while collaborating with developers to reproduce issues and confirm fixes.
- Create and maintain automated test scripts to strengthen coverage and improve testing efficiency.
- Support user acceptance testing and release readiness activities.
- Validate solutions against both business expectations and user requirements.
- Monitor system performance, reliability, and usability.
- Prepare test reports, share quality metrics, and present findings to stakeholders.
- Maintain test environments and test data.
- Work within CI/CD pipelines and continuous testing practices in a DevOps setting.
- Collaborate effectively with technical and business teams to support delivery and improvement.
Requirements
- A tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a similar field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Relevant industry certifications and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Experience creating test strategies and plans from business and technical inputs.
- Ability to build comprehensive test cases and test scenarios.
- Hands-on experience with manual and automated testing.
- Exposure to functional, regression, integration, and performance testing.
- Proven ability to manage defects and work with developers on issue reproduction and verification.
- Experience developing and maintaining automated test scripts.
- Solid understanding of UAT and release readiness processes.
- Ability to validate solutions against requirements and assess quality outcomes.
- Knowledge of performance, reliability, and usability monitoring.
- Capability to produce test documentation, quality reports, and stakeholder updates.
- Experience managing test environments and test data.
- Familiarity with CI/CD and continuous testing in a DevOps environment.
- Experience with Microsoft 365, Power Platform, Azure DevOps, and GitHub.
- Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills across technical and business groups.
