Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Erlestoke, working within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The role supports the everyday running of a busy prison and is part of a team handling a mix of security, administrative, and operational duties.
What the role involves
The job is varied and active. Duties can include checking security at the gate, searching people and items, processing deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The work combines office-based tasks with physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking prisoners to escort vehicles across the prison site.
About you
No formal qualifications are required. This role may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving environment and can be a strong starting point for a career in prison services.
Working pattern and exposure
As an OSG, you will work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to keep the prison operating smoothly. Unlike prison officers, your contact with prisoners is limited, though occasional interaction may happen depending on the prison.

The role provides practical insight into how a prison functions and may open doors to other prison roles, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £30,491. Alongside base pay, the package includes training, development, and progression opportunities.
