Role overview

M Group Energy is looking for a meter reader to join its metering function in a role focused on accurate meter reading, customer interaction, and safe fieldwork. The business supports essential energy infrastructure across transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering, and home decarbonisation. Its metering team provides gas, electricity, and water metering services across the UK energy retail sector.

The role sits within a team that installs, maintains, and manages meters so customers are billed correctly and usage patterns can be monitored. The company promotes a safety-first, client- and customer-focused culture where people are encouraged to develop and thrive.

Working location and hours

This position is based in the Isle of Mull, covering the PA62 to PA75 postcode areas. The advertised hours are 10 hours per week. Working times are available between Monday and Friday, from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

Pay and compensation

The salary is £25,397 per year, calculated on a 40-hour week. In addition, the role includes a non-consolidated allowance of £0.38 per hour and a non-contractual monthly bonus.

What the role involves

You will begin with a structured training programme before moving into field-based work. Each day starts with logging into a handheld device and planning the route. Because meters may be located inside or outside properties, you will need to time visits strategically to maximise access where needed.

The work involves travelling on foot or by vehicle depending on the area covered, moving from property to property while keeping personal and customer safety at the forefront. On site, you will take meter readings, record data accurately, and deal courteously with members of the public. The role is largely independent, but you will still have support from your field manager and the wider metering team. The job is outdoors and requires working through all weather conditions.

What you should bring

You should be self-driven and energetic, ideally with a background involving driving, appointment management, or outdoor work, although this is not essential. You will need a full UK driving licence, except for roles based in London. The role also requires the ability to work to deadlines, stay effective under pressure, and walk several miles each day.
