Position summary
The organization is hiring a Junior Illustrator in Hamilton, Montana to help deliver strong visual communication for NIH research programs. The role centers on turning complex scientific ideas into clear, engaging, and accessible visual assets for varied audiences. Work may include illustration, motion graphics, animation, video, web content, and graphic design. The successful candidate will work closely with subject matter experts and visual information specialists to ensure scientific accuracy and strong presentation.
What you'll do
- Contribute to visualization assignments supporting NIH research initiatives.
- Develop illustrations, animations, videos, web-based content, and graphic design materials for presentations and publication.
- Make sure all finished materials comply with Section 508 accessibility standards.
- Work with scientific subject matter experts and visual information specialists to translate broad scientific ideas into accurate and effective visuals.
- Help plan, storyboard, design, produce, and edit videos and animations used to explain or document scientific findings.
- Support the creation, reproduction, and display of original visual materials.
- Take part in program activities by sharing work, insights, and technical capabilities with teammates and stakeholders.
What we're looking for
- A bachelor’s degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, Animation, Visual Communications, or a related discipline, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
- Proven ability to produce visual content across multiple formats, including illustration, video, animation, and digital/web media.
- Working familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite or comparable design and multimedia tools.
- Foundational knowledge of 2-D and 3-D animation, video editing, and storyboarding.
- Awareness of Section 508 accessibility requirements, or willingness to learn them.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills for collaborating with scientific and technical experts.
- Ability to juggle several assignments, work to deadlines, and keep a strong focus on detail.
Preferred background
- Experience supporting scientific, medical, technical, or research-focused communications.
- Comfort working with complex scientific or technical information and adapting it for different audiences.
- Interest in biomedical research and public health communication.

Compensation
