Project Engineer

Role overview

Brian Perry Civil is seeking a Project Engineer to support the technical delivery of pipeline renewal projects in Auckland. This position sits between the Project Manager and site crews, translating plans into practical delivery while keeping work safe, efficient, and aligned with specification.

The role is highly hands-on and combines site presence with desk-based coordination. You will help plan work, manage subcontractors, monitor progress and costs, and ensure project documentation is completed to a close-out standard.

Key duties

• Build and maintain 3 to 12 month work programmes for pipeline renewals, coordinating labour, plant, and subcontractors to keep delivery on schedule.
• Prepare method statements, work packs, and JSEAs with supervisors, then oversee daily execution against programme targets.
• Support and guide the team by coaching technical capability, leading toolbox talks, and setting clear expectations for performance.
• Track expenditure, compare production progress with S-curves, and contribute to monthly reporting with reliable forecasts.
• Coordinate subcontractor work, including safety compliance, variation direction, and delivery against agreed scope.
• Make sure quality documentation is completed to handover standard and that all work satisfies resource consent and contract conditions.

What the role requires

You should hold a tertiary qualification in engineering or a closely related field. The role calls for at least five years of experience in civil construction, ideally with direct exposure to pipeline renewals or underground infrastructure.

You will need a strong grasp of construction sequencing and methods, especially in live network environments. Experience leading site teams and subcontractors is important, along with the confidence to run morning briefings, handle performance issues, and resolve site matters quickly.

Commercial awareness is also essential, including the ability to monitor costs, spot risks early, and support cost-to-complete forecasting. Clear communication, strong organisation, and the ability to manage multiple priorities without reminders are key.
