About the opportunity
As a C4I Designer with Austal Defence Australia, you will help define and deliver integrated command, control, communications, computers and intelligence solutions across defence shipbuilding programs. The role covers the full lifecycle of the system, with a focus on joining advanced capabilities into a unified, mission-ready outcome while working with OEMs and their integration partners.

Through the Strategic Shipbuilding Agreement, Austal is driving continuous naval shipbuilding in Western Australia, supporting sovereign capability, innovation and long-term opportunities for Australian industry and workers. This position offers a chance to contribute to work of national importance in the maritime sector.
Key responsibilities
- Support the C4I Engineer by completing assigned tasks.
- Build knowledge and experience with the goal of becoming a subject matter expert in agreed systems and equipment.
- Prepare, update and review C4I integration documentation, coordinating with Fitout designers on space constraints, Electrical teams on power and network needs, Mechanical teams on cooling and services, and Structural teams on mounting and load requirements.
- Assist with reviewing subcontract offers, scopes and required document lists, with support from the C4I Engineer when needed.
- Develop and adjust 3D CAD models and produce associated drawings.
- Create 2D CAD schematics, diagrams, layouts and detailed drawings.
- Provide support to Production during installation, build and ship transfer work.
- Assist V&V activities during testing and acceptance.
- Track and report Earned Value Management progress for design, documentation and physical completion.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of experience in electrical design or systems integration.
- At least 3 years of experience in drafting or modelling.
- Practical background in electrical design and integration, preferably within C4I and defence shipbuilding environments.
- Strong capability in both 2D and 3D drafting and modelling.
- Experience managing bills of materials and related lists in Excel and databases.
- Ability to write technical specifications.
- Experience with electrical equipment design and integration.
- Must be eligible to obtain a Defence Security Clearance.
