Role overview
As a Systems Engineer I, you will help deploy, maintain, and operate core infrastructure across Switch environments. The position is centered on keeping systems dependable, secure, and highly available while supporting projects, day-to-day operations, and long-term platform growth.
You will partner with internal stakeholders and outside vendors to diagnose technical problems, sustain performance, and assist with the rollout of new technologies. The role also includes on-call support, incident escalation, and participation in infrastructure standards and strategy.
Work location
This is a hybrid position. Candidates must live within one hour of a Switch data center in one of the following areas: Austin, TX; Houston, TX; Atlanta, GA; Reno, NV; Grand Rapids, MI; or Las Vegas, NV.
Key responsibilities
- Help deploy, set up, and maintain Windows and Linux server environments.
- Assist with virtualization, storage, and directory services platforms such as VMware, SAN, and Active Directory.
- Track system health and investigate issues across compute, storage, and identity layers.
- Contribute to infrastructure initiatives and keep assigned work moving forward.
- Maintain clear technical documentation and share knowledge with the team.
- Work in line with IT policies, operating procedures, and internal standards.
- Support service-level targets and response-time expectations for systems.
- Coordinate with vendors and third-party support providers to close technical issues.
- Provide Tier 2 operational support for infrastructure services.
- Take part in on-call coverage and help handle escalated incidents.
- Support evaluation and testing of emerging technologies.
What you should bring
- Practical experience supporting Windows Server and/or Linux systems.
- Foundational knowledge of virtualization tools, especially VMware.
- Familiarity with Active Directory and identity management concepts.
- Experience using monitoring and troubleshooting utilities.
- Basic understanding of backup and disaster recovery practices.
- Exposure to scripting or automation tools such as PowerShell or Ansible.
- Working knowledge of IT service management concepts.
Preferred background
- Experience with Microsoft Exchange or Exchange Online.
- Experience working in Azure AD and Microsoft 365 environments.
- Exposure to SAN/storage systems and networking fundamentals.
- Awareness of security practices and compliance-related tooling.
- Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Security+, MCSA/MCSE, RHCSA, VCP, or ITIL.
Experience guidance
- 8+ years of experience in information technology.
- Background supporting enterprise Windows and Linux environments.
- Proven ability to manage infrastructure projects, solve complex technical issues, and collaborate across teams.
- Equivalent mixes of education, certifications, and hands-on experience will also be considered.
