Role overview
The sonographer will carry out ultrasound imaging independently or with guidance from a senior sonographer. The role involves producing diagnostic-quality images, reviewing scan output, and escalating findings to the supervisor or radiologist when needed.
Key responsibilities
- Keep ultrasound-related consumables, materials, and equipment sufficiently stocked for daily work.
- Inform the supervisor promptly about shortages and maintain accurate records for reordering and replenishment.
- Perform ultrasound examinations in line with department rules, procedures, and clinical protocols.
- Use detailed knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to obtain images of high diagnostic value.
- Carry out other specialized radiography procedures when required.
- Assess image quality, completeness, and suitability, and guide colleagues where necessary before sending studies to the radiologist for review.
- Identify anatomy and pathology on cross-sectional imaging to help optimize scan settings and coordinate any additional imaging or tests with radiologists.
- Use radiology equipment, patient aids, and accessories safely and competently, and report faults, deterioration, or incidents to senior staff without delay.
- Keep the work area clean and orderly, including restocking supplies and cleaning equipment after use.
- Advise medical and technical staff on suitable techniques and imaging interventions.
- Handle patient and clinical staff queries and route them to the appropriate clinical team when needed.
- Complete other duties assigned by the supervisor.
- Support quality improvement by helping evaluate methods and develop practices in line with approved policies.
- Follow all safety rules, quality control measures, infection prevention practices, and environmental safety precautions.
- Protect patient confidentiality at all times.
- Work strictly within approved policies, procedures, and practice boundaries.
- Ensure standard operating procedures and quality assurance checks are maintained across all relevant sections.
- Document all interventions in the required format.
- Support clinical audit activities and provide related reports as agreed.
- Communicate politely and professionally with patients, families, and healthcare staff to gather information, explain procedures, clarify instructions, and share status updates.
- Participate in staff education sessions, including induction, teaching, peer review, case discussions, and clinical presentations.
- Take part in department programs, hospital committees, and staff meetings when required.
- Assist in the orientation and training of new hires and radiography interns.
- Share information appropriately in line with governing policies and procedures.
- Maintain professional competency by attending lectures, seminars, and online learning activities.
- Complete and maintain required licensure, certification, and mandatory training within the specified timelines.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of post-graduate ultrasound experience in an acute care hospital, including Doppler, obstetrics/gynecology, and abdominal sonography, with at least 2 years serving as a senior ultrasound radiographer in an acute care hospital.
- Alternatively, at least 4 years of post-graduate ultrasound experience in an acute care hospital, including Doppler, obstetrics/gynecology, and abdominal sonography.
- For UAE nationals, at least 2 years of post-graduate experience in general radiography.
- Postgraduate Ultrasound Diploma Certificate is preferred.
