Job description
The Opportunity
This role is for a compassionate Learning Mentor based in the Plymouth area, supporting young people who benefit from a highly personalised approach to education. The focus is on helping students feel secure, understood, and emotionally settled so they can begin to engage with learning.
The position sits within a Special Educational Needs environment and offers the chance to make a meaningful difference in the day-to-day lives of vulnerable learners.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with students on a one-to-one basis to help them manage challenges such as anxiety, sensory overwhelm, and refusal to attend school by developing practical coping strategies together.
- Provide steady emotional support and act as a reliable adult figure, helping students strengthen their wellbeing and gradually reconnect with education.
- Build positive partnerships with parents and carers to create a joined-up approach between home and school.
- Support learning outside the classroom in the local community, helping students build life skills, confidence in social settings, and the ability to handle everyday situations.
About You
You do not need a formal teaching background, but you should bring patience, strong listening skills, and a sincere commitment to supporting young people with additional needs.
Ideal Experience
The role is suited to candidates who have worked with children or young people with special educational needs, including Autism, ADHD, Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, or trauma-related experiences.
Working Pattern and Contract
This opportunity is available on a day-to-day basis or as a longer-term placement, giving flexibility depending on your situation and goals.
