Job description

Role overview

Wood is looking for a Lead Piping Engineer to join its project team in Doha, Qatar. This is a long-term, site-based opportunity. The role is centered on delivering high-quality engineering work, defining and approving technical scopes, completing assigned work packages, sharing specialist expertise with the business, supporting growth, and—where needed—leading teams or serving as a technical authority.

Key responsibilities

The position involves taking on complex engineering assignments that may require improved methods, new approaches, or the development of better products, processes, or techniques. You will assess whether proposed designs, products, and equipment are feasible and technically sound, and work with advanced engineering knowledge to produce deliverables and resolve challenging project issues with limited supervision.

You may act as Lead Engineer or project Technical Authority, provide technical reviews for difficult project work, and guide highly skilled professionals working on major engineering efforts. In consulting environments, you may also oversee a portfolio of projects, support client engagement, and help manage cost, schedule, resources, and risk.

The role also calls for participation in brownfield and greenfield opportunities, with particular exposure to onshore and offshore oil and gas work.

Project delivery duties

  • Carry out assigned engineering scopes and supervise delivery of complex technical tasks.
  • Assess studies, prototypes, models, and system investigations, then interpret findings and recommend practical applications.
  • Help resolve difficult design conflicts, material limitations, and coordination issues across disciplines.
  • Coordinate the rollout of engineering design solutions and verify the accuracy of project documentation.
  • Oversee complex portions of major projects and work through broad, demanding technical challenges that require diagnostic judgement.
  • Apply mature commercial judgement to arrive at practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Take part in incident investigations when needed.
  • Check work against applicable standards, objectives, and specifications.
  • Follow discipline procedures and contribute suggestions for continuous improvement.
  • Manage key stakeholders during execution and delivery of contracted work.
  • Organize, participate in, and occasionally lead design reviews.

Technical leadership

  • Advise on design practices, construction approaches, and other specialist technical matters.
  • Support the creation of new engineering methods and contribute to both short- and long-term planning.
  • Evaluate options and choose technical solutions that best balance technical quality and financial outcome.
  • Act as Technical Authority when assigned.
  • Provide technical oversight for low- to medium-value bids and proposals.
  • Review subcontracted scopes and, where required, oversee vendor activity.
  • Promote technical excellence through example and clear communication of expectations.
  • Stay aware of new technical developments and ways to better meet customer needs.

Business growth and people management

  • Support business development through client engagement, relationship building, and identifying opportunities to extend scope.
  • Contribute to bids and proposals.
  • Supervise technical specialists or engineers handling complex assignments when required.
  • Give direction to both professional and non-professional team members.
  • Set out requirements, allocate tasks, and monitor progress against targets and specifications.
  • Coach, mentor, and support direct reports while helping maintain competence standards.
  • Take part in recruitment, transfers, promotions, and succession planning as needed.
  • Help maintain motivated, capable teams and manage performance where applicable.
  • Direct resources efficiently and supervise subcontracted design work.
  • Provide HSSE leadership, including adherence to site, office, and technical safety requirements.

Qualifications and experience

A bachelor’s degree in engineering is required. The ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of experience in brownfield oil and gas mechanical piping design and engineering, including a minimum of 5 years involving construction and commissioning activities. Experience with Shell DEPs will be considered an advantage.

You should be technically strong in your discipline, committed to continuous professional development, and familiar with the relevant regulatory framework and legislation. The role also requires the ability to lead, supervise, motivate, and mentor technical professionals; manage scope, budget, and schedule; and work effectively across disciplines and with external stakeholders.

Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills are important, along with the ability to adapt quickly, troubleshoot issues, and develop practical solutions for complex client requirements. A solid understanding of quality management standards and broader business functions is also valuable.

Why join

  • Opportunity to work on meaningful projects supporting major industry clients across oil and gas and emerging energy sectors.
  • A workplace culture that actively supports diversity and inclusion.
  • Competitive pay with periodic salary reviews aligned to market conditions.
  • Life insurance benefit equal to 2 times base salary, up to a maximum of QAR 1,000,000.
  • End-of-service gratuity in line with Qatar Labor Law after 1 year of service, calculated as three weeks for every year worked.
  • Medical insurance with coverage up to QAR 250,000 per person per year; pre-existing and chronic conditions covered up to QAR 10,000.
  • Employee Assistance Programme for confidential support on work or personal matters affecting mental, physical, social, or financial well-being.
  • One professional membership, registration, subscription, certification, or license per year reimbursable for eligible employees and relevant to the role or development plan.
  • Access to a global network of experts working at the forefront of the industry.
