Job description

Position Overview

This role supports the Hispanic community by providing interpretation and translation services between English and Spanish. The position is designated as essential, so the employee must be prepared to report for duty during emergencies or catastrophic events.

Work Location

MDH - Somerset County Health Department
8928 Sign Post Road
Westover, MD 21871

Grade

ASTD8

Minimum Education and Experience

A high school diploma or a high school equivalency certificate is required. Applicants also need at least six months of formal interpretation and translation experience between English and another language. This can include documented volunteer interpreting work for a nonprofit, human service, or faith-based organization.

Substitution Notes

  • Additional experience interpreting and translating between English and another language may be used in place of the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Military service experience in qualifying non-commissioned officer linguist or language capability roles may be counted toward the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Selective Qualification

The final hire must hold certification as a medical interpreter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comfort using common workplace technology, including Google tools, Microsoft applications, and Excel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Solid time management skills.

License and Vehicle Requirement

This classification may include duties that require driving a motor vehicle. If assigned those duties, the employee must have a valid Maryland driver’s license.

Selection Process

Candidates who satisfy the minimum and selective qualifications will move forward for additional review. Applications may be scored based on how well education, training, and experience match the job requirements. Applicants should provide full and accurate details, including related education, work history, dates, and hours worked. College degree and major should be clearly identified where applicable. For education completed outside the United States, any offer will depend on submission of a foreign credential equivalency evaluation before employment begins, and it may be requested before interview.

Applications must be complete and submitted by the closing date. Information received after the deadline will not be considered. Incorrect forms are not accepted, and a resume cannot replace the required application.

Qualified candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for at least one year, and that list may be used to fill similar openings in this or other state agencies.

Benefits

State of Maryland benefits are available for this position.
